cost beneift of a secondary domain controller?
Hi Guys, I am composing a cost benefit for a secondary domain controller. While IT guys see the obvious need for one, executives sometimes do not. let me know if i missed any! THANKS! Increased Performance - When tasks are shared across multiple servers, each server can be tuned for optimal performance. For example, disk input/output on servers can be relatively costly. If you access and print many files, performance might be affected. Moving this task to another server could increase the performance of the existing server. Better Availability - When tasks are hosted across multiple servers, tasks hosted on one server remain available even when the other server is taken offline for tasks such as routine maintenance. Additionally, adding another server translates to increased availability and reliability for applications, services and data. This availability can also improve scalability as demand increases. Examples: 1. For businesses with heavy data usage and reliance, Microsoft Distributed File System [DFS] can be used to replicate files between the servers and give high availability of data network shares. 2. An additional domain controller provides fault tolerance for user authentication. 3. Adding a domain controller provides additional reliability and availability to critical network services such as DNS and DHCP. Fault Tolerance and Redundancy If one domain controller should have a catastrophic hardware failure the other domain controller can take over and still provide all services and data. I've seen, air-conditioning units fail, multiple hard disks fail, power supplies fail, etc. Each of these failures can result in catastrophic loss. When you only have one server, it might be a day or a week before you can get going again, if at all. A multiple server solution can mitigate theses risks. It can even further be mitigated with a high availability and reliability secondary server hardware build. Improved Worker Efficiency - Even 20 paid employees unable to work effectively for a couple of hours or days represents a huge cost to a business. Having a secondary domain controller would mitigate or eliminate costs of lost employee productivity by maintaining availability of those critical services and data.
