chk disk utility
On my laptop I get the message "The file or directory C:/Users is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chk disk utility." The problem is I can't log. I have tried the safe mode but still can't find a way to run the chk disk utility.

You can't login because it is corrupt? try this First do you either have a boot disk like (the windows cd) or access to a floppy drive and a floppy disk, it could also work with a cd bunner. You can create a start up disk by formating a blank cd or a working floppy. Hit F12 at the bios loading screen to open the startup manager, or enter setup and change the boot order to what has the boot disk, prob the cd. With the windows disk you can either repair windows or open some recovery console that opens the prompt. Once in to dos or command line prompt enter: C:\Windows\system 32\CHKDSK Your systemis scaning using CHKDSK now.
