cannot change PST file path via gpo

Outlook 2013

I need to autoarchive messages over 48 months old on 600 mailboxes (exch2007) to PST files.  This needs to happen with no user intervention.

I created a GPO to change the autoarchive settings in outlook and all of the settings took except Move all items to.  In Outlook, it stills points to the default location, even though I set the Default location for PST in the policy.

Also, I see that Inbox is disabled for autoarchive by default.  How can I change that across the board?

 Thanks!

Hi,

How you configured Outlook Auto Archive in Group Policy? Do you use Outlook 2010 Administrative Templates to configure the GPO?

Please export and post the Group Policy settings for further troubleshooting.

You may refer to this article to redeploy auto archive group policy in test environment and check whether it works:

Hi,

The "Move all items to" setting is not configurable via GPO. If you want to push the setting out to users, that can be pushed in the PRF file but the users would still be able to change the setting. See:

http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/836755

As for the "Inbox is disabled for autoarchive by default", this is the default behavior and it's not possible to change the setting via GPO. The AutoArchive settings we can configure via GPO is the default AutoArchive settings we can see under File > Options > Advanced > AutoArchive Settings. These settings won't apply to those folders that have AutoArchive settings set to "Do not archive items in this folder".

As a workaround, we can try use managed folders to achieve the goal. See:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/bb125163(v=exchg.80).aspx

If you need further assistance regarding managed folders, you can post a question in Exchange forum:

Thanks for the replies.

Our ultimate goal is to move the old messages to individual PST files for each user.  Do you know of a better way to do this besides trying to 'autoarchive' them from each mailbox?

Hi,

If the AutoArchive setting of Inbox is set to "Do not archive items in this folder", changing default AutoArchive setting won't affect the Inbox. We need to manually go to each user's Outlook, click File > Options > Advanced > AutoArchive Settings and click "Apply these settings to all folders now" button. This option is not configurable via GPO. So, I'm afraid there is no method to achieve the goal from Outlook side.

I provided the managed folders as a workaround. As far as I know, we can use the method to move items to a managed custom folder, which has a similar function as AutoArchive. See:

Since we are not experts for Exchange questions, you can post in Exchange forum to see if there is any other alternative:

Thanks for your understanding.
