can you have the winmail.dat problem even if the email is in HTML format?

we have outlook 2013 and exchange 2013 inhouse.

when one of our remote users send an email to his salesforce (they have private email accounts, AOL, AT&T, so on) several of them get the winmail.dat instead of the attachment.

I told him how to verify he was sending the email in HTML format, and he said he checked and it was HTML, but when he sent the email, several of the salesforce received the winmail.dat file.

is that possible when the email is in HTML format?

Hi,

HTML formatted messages generally will NOT cause this behavior, except in cases where users have configured Outlook to use message backgrounds and/or graphics (such as in their signature area). Since it's not your email program generating the issue, there is not much we can do on the senders' side to fix the problem. The only method is to send the email account in Plain Text format.

I changed the settings for the contact he is sending the email to, so that it always send in plain text only.

BUT - when I select the contact to send an email, email is in RTF format.

am i missing something?

I can duplicate this issue with my colleague. The email is sent out in the format set under File > Options > Mail > Compose messages regardless of what format is set particularly for the contact.

Please try changing the 'Compose messages' setting to Plain Text or HTML and then test the issue again.
