backupExec wants MAPI and CDO
BackupExec v12gives an error on Exchange 2007 when attempting to backup individual mailboxes: "To support individual mailbox message and folder restores from Information Store backups, you must download and install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects package version 06.05.7888 or later on the Exchange 2007 Server for backup." I already have cdosys.dll and mapui32.dll in the system32 folder (and assume they are registered). Do I need to install or enable something for BackupExec to understand that they are available? I can't find any documentation or installer (to attempt a reinstall) for them. Any suggestions?

Same problem here !!! I can't restore also :-( Here's some information taken from the Symantec knowledgebase: Currently, Microsoft does not provide a Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) Package for Windows Server 2008. Therefore, if the GRT Option is enabled for an Exchange 2007 Server Backup to Disk (B2D), the individual items (mailboxes, etc...) for an Exchange 2007 Server that runs on Windows Server 2008 cannot be restored with Backup Exec. Additionally, if the backup media is tape, the individual items from Exchange 2007 Servers that run on Windows Server 2008 cannot be browsed. These operations will be supported when Microsoft provides an updated MAPI/CDO package for Windows 2008 Server. So we have to wait?! Until Microsoft releases an updated version.

I too am preparing for upgrading to Exchange 2007 SP1 on Server 2008. Also, I'm upgrading to backupexec 12, and in order to use the GRT for exchange, it needs the above install. However, I have not been able to find a version for Server 2008....Has anybody found it yet? Microsoft? Bueller? Bueller?

I was able to successfully backup(GRT) exchange 2007 sp1 on server 2008 using BE12 by installing outlook 2007 on exchange server. Installation of outlook 2007 is fully supported on exchange server by micrsoft. I'm having restore issues which may not be related MAPI/CDO. I'm going to open ticket with Symantec in few days but my production BE installationis 11D.

Is there another solution besides installing Outlook on the serer (which is other wise wholly unnecessary)?What is it about the Outlook install that fixes this?-Douglas

The best way to get these files installed and registered properly is the MAPI/CDO Download Package (Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1). It was recently updated to work on Windows Server 2008. I can confirm that reinstalling MAPI+CDO 1.2.1 fixes the problem. The key is to UNINSTALL the MAPI+CDO first (if it is already installed) and then install the MAPI+CDO again. No reboot is necessary, but an install of MAPI+CDO over itself does not work...must uninstall first and then install again. My install - Windows Server 2008 EE X64, Exchange 2007 EE SP1, Symantec Backup Exec 12 w/all patches installed from LiveUpdate.
