Hi all, Exchange 2003 servers We are going to use third party to scan and accept emails for us and add MX records to point to third party. Do I need to worry about PTR record since outbound emails are sent to our exchange server out? Our exchange server's IP does not match mx records' IP? Can anyone help me out? the email outbound IP should match MX's IP address? Thank you.

Hi , If your IP is not matching with your MX records than you should use smart host because if you will send emails directly to the internet than your emails will be treated as spam by the other domain so I will suggest you that use smart host or even make your MX records pointing to your HUB or Edge Server. I hope this will help you. Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, Phone: +923008210320

The Reverse PTR Record should match the IP of your A Host Record for your mail server, typically its mail.yourdomain.com, not your MX Record. Your ISP will most likely be the party responsible for setting the Reverse PTR Record up.MVP Exchange Server

Thank you for your help. So, another question: in merger case, two company (a.com and b.com) share the SMTP naming space ab.com. add MX record (for ab.com) to point to Company A (a.com)'s third party service; then mails go out through each company's exchange server. How should I add ab.com PTR record? what's the right way to do it? Thank you.

Hi, You would need PTR records for the IP address(es) that outbound mail is being sent from. Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, Phone: +923008210320

Thank you. I am little confused now. People told me before that I need to create PTR for MX records of my domain. So, now, actually, I need to create PTR for outbound's server's IP address, not MX records? Which one is right? PTR for MX record or PTR for outbound's server ?

As you stated before that you are using third party and your mails will arrive directly to their server and you want to send emails directly so your MX records will point them but your PTR records will point to your exchange server. I think you understand what I mean ? Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, Phone: +923008210320

Thank for your help again. So to make it clear, I do not create PTR for each MX records (aviod issue as spams) and I need to create PTR for outbound server.
