activated Office getting not activated popup message

we have Volume License agreement and using MAK keys for our Office products. one user is experiencing popups coming to his laptop for several days now (he just got back from vacation). i checked his Office installation and they are activated.

could this be a malware doing this or some flak with an Office component?

this is the popup message:

Hi,

If you both use Skype for Business, you can use it to help the user remotely.

Or try the Windows Remote Assistance.

Hi,

To determine whether the Office is activated:

  • Open a command prompt. For instance via:
    • Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> Command Prompt
    • Windows XP
      Start-> Run: cmd
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8
      Start-> type: cmd
  • In the command prompt, type the following:
    • Office 2010 (32-bit) on a 32-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
    • Office 2010 (32-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
    • Office 2010 (64-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
    • Office 2013 (32-bit) on a 32-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
    • Office 2013 (32-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
    • Office 2013 (64-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows
      cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
  • You should now get a screen with some license details. To protect privacy, I suggest you take a snapshot of the details and send the image to our email address:ibsofc@microsoft.com. Please add the url of this thread in the email for easy tracking.

In addition, the issue may also occur if the Office install is corrupted. Please go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features to repair Office, check if the issue persists.
