Your message was deleted without being read
Hi We are using Exchange Server 2007 and have a few users that use IMAP (using kontact under linux). One of those users just cleaned up his mailbox, deleting some older mails. Now he was notified that mails were sent so several other users with "Your message was deleted without being read". Is there a way to configure this? We would like to supress read notifications (really read AND deleted unread) for our IMAP users completely, but keep them for our outlook users. (We will be switching to Exchange 2010 very soon, so if there is only a solution for 2010, we are fine.) Reagrds, Steffen

Hi, This is a client option there nothing that you can change on server end, if the user is using outlook then there is a option which say. never send a read receipt in email options.Ripu Daman Mina | MCSE 2003 & MCSA Messaging

Sorry NO. This is a "feature" of Exchange 2007. It applies if you use IMAP or POP3. If you use MAPI (such as Outlook or OWA), then it is a option of your client.

Would you please let me know where is the disappeared message, the “Deleted Items” folder? Please refer this thread that has the same problem as yours: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchange2010/thread/587fee0b-6990-4a26-9d25-679f8acc7647 ThanksYour expertise never fails to impress!

Try setting up transport rules for the following. 1- Remove message header Disposition-Notification 2- Remove message header Return-Receipt This will remove the request to have a read reciept sent to the user thus elimitating your issue. You should be able to selectively test this on one of your users and then expand it as needed. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Hi Removing those headers is NOT what we want. The mail user agent shall notify the user, that the sender requested a notification and the user shall then decide to send it or not. We just don't what Exchange to sent those on it's own. Furthermore: We cannot reliably reproduce those notifications. If I send a new message to some other user and he deletes it unread, I get a "read" notification, but for the original user haveing those problems "deleted unread" messages were sent. Is there any way to prevent Exchange (the mta) to process these headers in such a faulty way and still allow kontact (the mua) to process them? Is there any document that describes correctly, WHEN exactly exchange send notificatioon on its own? Regards, Steffen
