Your mailbox size is over the limit message incorrectly received
I have one user on Exchange 2003 who every night receives the standard system message that their mailbox is over the size limit. Database level limits are not set. Limits are only set at the mailbox level. The system message seems to think the limits for this user are 100MB with a warning at 95MB and that the mailbox is 157MB in size.ADSI and ADUC confirm user's limit is 60MB for sending with a warning at 55MB. ESM shows user has less than 10MB.User is putting mails into .pst file so mailbox is not increasing. Why is this happening. I've seen similar issues reported on forums but no answers. How do I troubleshoot this?

How long has this been going on? If you look at the properties of the mailbox within Outlook and click the Folder Size button, how big is the mailbox reported as? Maybe there is a pointer or something off in the mailbox. You might try something as simple as dismount the mailbox database and then remount it. That might shake loose whatever the problem is.Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Jim McBee, MVP - thanks for your response - much appreciated. It's been going on for at least 2 or 3 weeks maybe much longer. User advises the Outlook folder size shows as being well under the limit.I will take your advice and check after our next maintenance period. Unfortunately I can't dismount stores/reboot servers easily. It could be a few weeks from now, but I will update the results. Thanks again.

Hi, I suggest you move the user to another storage group and test the issue. If the issue persists, please backup the mails and recreate the mailbox, then check the issue again. Thanks, Elvis

Didn't get to satisfactorily resolve this issue as the userdidn't want me moving their mailbox and it's nearly impossible to dismount/remount databases in my environment. If they complain in the future I'll try the given advice though. Thanks for the help and if I tackle the issue in the near future I'll update this thread.
