A few people + myself work on a word document that is stored on SharePoint in Office 365. We are having a problem where the comments that one person leaves in the document get duplicated many times. In just a few minutes there could be dozens of the same comment in the document! This is a really broken experience and needs to be fixed. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?

We are having the same problem except this is for on Prem 2010 enterprise.  We have just 1 whose comments from previous days gets duplicated hundreds of times and inflating the size of the document to the point it cannot be worked on.  It's making our collaboration experience a nightmare.

We are having the same problem on SharePoint 2013 enterprise - to the point that the file becomes essentially corrupt.

Any update on this issue? Im having the same problem. Comments are duplicating bloating the document size and chewing up my RAM.

We are getting hundred to thousands of these duplication's here.

Looking forward to a fix, or some information regarding what could be causing this.

Same issue for us. Using Sharepoint 2013 and Word 2013. Interesting part is that only the comments from one person are getting duplicated - not all of them.

having the same issue on sharepoint foundations 2013 and office pro plus 2013.  both have SP1 installed.

SharePoint 2013, office 2013 here. This issue just came up for us, luckily only for one document so far. I have found no solution beyond deleting all of that specific users' comments. There really should be SOME response from support on this, even if just to say "delete all of that users comments".
