As the title says, Word 2013 hangs if doc template is on SharePoint.

Scenario:

1. Create template document in a SharePoint library.

2. Create a new document using the template.  Save it on SharePoint or locally...doesn't matter.

3. Open the new document.  Word 2013 hangs permanently with message "Opening template <templatename>...".  Word 2010 does not hang.  I have OneDrive for Business installed, but I don't think that matters. 

This is 100% reproducible, happens every time, and has been reproduced by Office 365 Support (http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/154/p/349132/956097.aspx#956097).  My question is, this problem has existed for nine months or more, and I'm wondering if MS is going to fix it.  SharePoint used to be a good place to share company templates, but this no longer works with Office 2013.  We can't upgrade anyone else in our company until this is fixed.  Please advise. 

PS: This is the third time I've been referred to another forum for resolution, so I'm hoping I can get a real answer here.

Based on your description, when you opened document from SharePoint Word freeze.

First I suggest you add the address of SharePoint site to the list of Trusted sites in IE. This issue might be caused by an authentication issue when SharePoint is trying to check if the user has permission to edit the document.

Then please set the registry, this issue also might be caused by setting to a too restrictive option for your environment.

The registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\SignIn

DWORD value signinoptions, set the "signinoptions" registry value to 0.

I am experiencing a similar issue as the original poster.

The template is saved in a local sharepoint installation. Everything works fine, except the templates. They were working fine previously, but my guess is that an update for office 2013 is causing this. Happens on all the computers.

The Office 2013 installation is of the click-to-run type and is 32bit.

When I open up the template it opens fine. But when I press the file button (go to backstage) there is a significant delay. The delay can be three seconds, and a lot of the time it's 15-30 seconds until I get the backstage open. While the application is hanging, I cannot do anything within the application.

I have tried the steps George provided, as well as followed the link, but it's essentially the same thing. THat didn't change anything for us.
