Word 2013 Hangs every time a document is saved

Hello,

I have a problem with Word 2013 on Windows 8.

Every time I save a document, the program hangs until the file is written to disk. Things works fine afterwards until the next save. It happens with documents of all sizes, 200KB, 500KB, 1MB.

While this happens the "saving to disk" progress bar at the bottom of the window takes several seconds to complete. During this time, the whole application hangs.

The problem suddenly appeared. Automatic updates is disabled. I have updated since but the issue remain.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi,

I would like to confirm the Microsoft Office 2013 version with you.

Do you use a Microsoft Office 2013 (Preview) version or Microsoft Office 2013 (Release) version?

Where do you save the documents?

If you save the documents to network, try saving the files in local disk. And also try saving the files to the desktop.

Are these document files created in Word 2013?

Hello I have the same problem when saving a 2MB file to a local SSD drive. What is happening?

Is this related to references?

We are starting to have the same issue. If I save to my network share, Word/Excel 2013 crashes when trying to save and then my connection to the server is compromised and I have to reboot to get it to come back. WTF? If this is the new way Microsoft is going to handle their products, I will switch to Word Perfect Suite.

Hi Dan!

I was having the same issue, and I fixed it using three solutions (haven't tested them isolated, though):

- Disabling the hardware graphics acceleration (File -> Options -> Advanced -> Display -> Disable hardware graphics acceleration)

After starting Word, I opened Windows Task Manager, found winword.exe process in the list and applied two changes (right-click on the process to display the menu):

- Set its priority to real time

- Set the process' affinity to only 1 CPU, can be anyone (I chose only CPU 0 as my PC has 8 cores)

That totally solved the slow saving issue I had been having.

Nevertheless, I don't know any automatic way to apply these changes every time Word is started, so I have been applying that manually, every time :(

Hope it helps you!

Well... after a few more tests I noticed that this solution I proposed, in fact, only decreases the chances of slowing down when saving.

Word still hangs sometimes, but less frequently.

I can't say that solution is excellent, but serves as a temporary/desperate workaround.

I am feeling completely orphan here... I used to have Microsoft 2010 installed, working like a charm! Then, for some reason, I felt like buying Office 2013... Now I regret that decision somewhat!

PowerPoint and Excel are still working perfectly fine, and even better than before! But Word's hanging-while-saving is really driving me insane! (PS: I'm not saving the files to flash drives/network drives/cloud, I'm saving the files to my local hard disk, which is excellent shape)

Hi all,

me and my colleagues on Office 2013 are also having the same problem. any solution since the timing of this post?

I have colleagues who are still on Office 2010, and their saving is very fast on the same document.

if there is no solution to this, I will be requesting my company to switch back to office 2010 for better productivity.

hi Rex,

I don't think Dan's issue is resolved. maybe he has given up and downgraded his office? (which is what I am tempting to do..).

if there is any test you need to further isolate the situation, please let us know. we think Office 2013 is great and we really want to help make it even better!

Hi Rex, this thread is definitely not closed.

This is happening to a lot of people.  MS Office Pro Plus Word 2013.

Word will hang during an autosave, or manual save. Sometimes it comes back, usually it doesn't.  File size and content do not matter.  Can we get someone to pay attention here!

Gentlemen,  I have been experiencing the very same issue.  I'm running MS Office Word 2013 via my subscription to Office 365, which, in turn, was acquired in August 2014 when I purchased Microsoft's Surface Pro 3.  You'd think that if my hardware is made by Microsoft, its OS is made by that company, and its integrated office suite is also made by that company, you would be best positioned (better than using a computer where the hardware, OS and office software were from differing companies) to operate trouble-free.  Well, in several respects, my hopes have been dashed.

On numerous occasions each day, but not every time, I've experienced this "hang" problem, when trying to "SAVE AS" to my local C drive.  It seems to make no difference whether it is a large size or small size file.  My only option has been to:  (1) use Task Manager to forcibly close the Word program, thus losing everything I've done, and (2) re-boot the computer (fortunately, shut down and re-boot on a Surface takes a half minute total, even with login) and then restart Word, and create/save a totally blank document in the intended save location, after which I can then use CTRL-S to save the document as I expand its contents from zero at the start.

My Surface is set to automatic updates on all three aspects (firmware/hardware drivers etc., Office 2013, and the OS, and related Windows files).  I've gone into update history and have zero error messages - all updates have loaded successfully, and there are no more updates to obtain.

This is intolerable.  Microsoft needs to attend to this, or else, as with another comment earlier, I will be forced, due to the loss of productivity and waste of time (and sometimes loss of very good thoughts I'd written down and now could not recapture or reconstruct), to go to WordPerfect.

I'm not terribly anxious to go try out various unofficial, non-sanctioned little patches or fixes, and risk fouling up my computer setup even worse (given that I am not an expert anyway and might mess up the suggested fix).  We need to hear something from The Source, from Microsoft itself, in an approved, sanctioned manner, on how to stop Word from hanging on "Save As."

Many thanks
