Word 2013 - Incompatible Office products are installed on your machine.

I got this message this morning (20 Aug) when I first attempted to open a Word document, I've have no previous problems.

Nothing has changed about my environment since I last opened the document successfully except following updates:

Microsoft Access Runtime 2013 originally installed on 17 August (37 updates on 19 August)  Microsoft Windows
    KB3081441 on 19 Aug
    KB2081444 on 20 Aug  Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (64-bit)
    KB3070446 on 19 Aug
    KB3045324 on 20 Aug

Has anyone else encountered this problem in connection with any of the updates noted?

Thanks

Hi,

Regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.

  • Which operation system do you use?
  • What the detailed version number of your Office? (We can see it in File=>Account=>About)
  • Was this issue occurred with other Office suits, such as Excel?

As far as I know, this issue might be occur with mixed install types. For example, your Office 2013 is C2R version, but the Microsoft Access Runtime 2013 is MSI version. Please try to remove Microsoft Access Runtime 2013 to test.

If this issue still exists, please try to remove the 37 updates on 19 August, it'll help us to narrow down this issue.

Please let me know the result.

Regards,

George Zhao

Hi,

Based my research, this error might be pop-up, when we mix the C2R and MSI version. Did you install the Microsoft Access Runtime 2013 with a MSI version? If yes, please try to remove it and check if it is helpful.

Hi George,

No, I don't have Microsoft Access Runtime 2013 installed and never have had.

My initial suspicion - based on the time it occurred - is that it might be linked to having Office 2016 Preview installed on one of my other devices and editing a Word document on each of them. However, since this error message appears when I am trying to open documents that have only been edited on this Office 2013 PC, it seems unlikely. Also, FYI, the document that gives rise to this error will eventually open after several attempts.

Now I am going to try a solution proposed in another thread:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-office_storage/incompatible-office-products-installed-on-this/f08b28d2-519e-479f-9c93-b65c81ccea3e?auth=1

There are several possible answers here: 1. Uninstall the Visio 2013 application, 2. Uninstall the February 10, 2015 update for Office 2013 (KB2920798), 3. Stop the "Microsoft Office Document Cache Sync" i.e. the CSISYNCCLIENT.EXE process

I have tried solution #1 and removed Visio 2013 (which was an expired trial version) and it appears to have fixed my problem for now. I will monitor this situation.

I would note that this issue is reported as occurring between Word and OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint which seems to indicate the problem lies at the interface of Word and an online repository.

On a related (?) note, some of my Word 2013 Jump List entries are doubled up. One on the path is <doc name> (C:\Users\Oliver\OneDrive\<folder name>) on the other it is shown as https://d.docs.live.net/<my unique ID>/Documents/<foldername>

If I right click them, the ones with a path to C:\Users\Oliver\OneDrive\<folder name> have a proper context sensitive menu appear and the ones linked directly to https://d.docs.live.net only say "Open" on right click. I have no idea if this is related or not.

Finally, I also see this solution proposed - to remove and reinstall OneDrive:

FYI, I do not have OneDrive for Business. My OneDrive version is: Version 2015 (build 17.3.5951.0827)
