Word 2010 document becomes Read-Only after saving it

Hi,

My Word 2010 document is becoming "Read Only" after saving it, for information my doucment is on the desktop . I searched on this forum and find a couple of solutions (deactivating auto saving, etc.) but it does not work at all. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Sylvain.

Instead of the Desktop, try saving it to your local drive and see the behavior changes.

Yes, by the time I was typing my message, I tried to move the document to a different location and it worked well. So that is a correct workaround.

But as I am curious, I wonder why the docuemnt is becoming Read-Only when I am saving it on the Desktop...

Thanks,

Sylvain.

I've read articles and blogs of people arguing each side of whether you should use the Desktop as a storage folder and I really don't have anything substantial to add to either the pro or con side of the issue.

However, what I know about Word is that it behaves a bit different and seems to have issues when you’re actively editing document that are stored on the Desktop.  I would speculate that the issue has something to do with the screen driver software.

When you’re editing a document, Word is actually using something like a dozen or more temporary hidden files and some of these are stored in the same folder as the source document. If the source document’s folder is the Desktop, then there has to be interaction with the screen driver.

This interaction with the screen driver is one variable that makes the Desktop folder unique and possibly problematic and thus Word under certain conditions makes the file Read Only.

Sorry to burst your bubble, folks, but saving to the desktop is not the problem.

I save to the My Documents folder and subfolders within it; I get the read-only problem fairly frequently, and it drives me nuts.  I have done a fair bit of research on this topic, and have seen this suggestion before.  I am glad it works for you, but it doesn't do it for me.

Isn't this an issue Microsoft should be resolving?  I have seen that it is a problem as far back as Word 2003.

Help!

Fran500 is right, saving to the desktop is NOT the problem. This happens to me all the time as well, and I very rarely save documents to the desktop. They are always in document folders or subfolders.

I think it has something to do with Internet Explorer. I get messages all the time that IE has stopped working (when I'm not even using it, when I'm not even online) and all my programs stop working until IE can reset itself. I suspect that somehow IE is integrated into core functions of other Microsoft applications and there's a bug (or two or 500) in there.

Nobody on the web seems to know how to fix this issue. It's truly maddening.

I only use Firefox, not IE, and I have the same problem.  Since I write a lot, this is a huge headache which forces me to change the file name every time I open it for editing.

I've been using the same Word version (2010) for years, have done nothing different, and all of a sudden my Word documents are mysteriously coming up as read only.  Totally frustrating.  They are not saved to my desktop...like I said I've done nothing different.  The only fix I found was to "save as" and give the document a new name and delete the old one, but that is time consuming and very aggravating.  Microsoft, please help!

All of the Word documents in a particular folder mysteriously became "Read only" this morning.

The fix that worked for me was to right-click on the folder containing the problem documents.

Under Properties, on the General tab, under Attributes, "Read Only" had become checked.

I unchecked "Read Only" and was prompted to "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files." It worked!
