Word 2010 - Unable to Save New Font Default for Envelopes

I am using Word 2010 64-bit.  I select a new font for the Delivery Address and click Set As Default and a dialog box says that this change will affect all new documents based on the NORMAL template.

But the next time I do an envelope, the old font re-appears, so my new font is not saved as the default.

Is this a bug in Word 2010 64-bit?

Hi

Thank you for using Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.

From your description, I understand that you want to change default font in Word 2010. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

To change the style of the default font in Word 2010, follow these steps:

a)      If you do not have a document open, create a new document that is based on the Normal template. To do this, click File, click New, click Blank Document, and then click Create.

b)      In the Font group, click the Font flyout. (Hotkey: Ctrl + D )

c)      Select the options that you want to apply to the default font, such as font style and font size. If you selected specific text, the properties of the selected text are set in the dialog box.

d)      Click Set As Default.

e)      Select the All documents based on the Normal.dotm template? , and then click OK.

More detailed information you can refer to this links:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/change-or-set-the-default-font-HP010368862.aspx?CTT=1

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291291

If it’s not work fine, please follow these steps to save as Normal.dotm to template folder after change default Font style

a)      Click File > Save As

b)      In the File name box, Type follow text  Normal

c)      Drop down Save as type: choose Word Macro-Enabled Template(*.dotm)

d)      In the location box , type the following text, and then press ENTER:

%userprofile%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates

e)      Click Save button, Exit Word

f)       Re-Start Word 2010, and then open the document.

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely

I had the same problem with Word 2010.  In addition to the Delivery Address, the Default font for the body of letters could not be changed.  The problem was third-party Add-Ins. I found a PDF Add-In that I believe was added when I loaded software for my wireless Canon printer.  To fix the problem go to the file tab in Word 2010, select Options, select Add-Ins, and at the bottom find Manage COM Add-In and click on Go.  In the dialog box that comes up remove the checks from the boxes of the listed Add-Ins.  -  cmwinters

William Zhou CHN does not answer the question.   The problem is changing the default font on envelopes.

cmwinters gives a reasonable answer, but it does not work on mine.

We're using Word 2010 32-bit and have the same problem.  Normal.dotm controls documents but not envelopes.  And setting the default font in Mailing/Envleopes does not really change amyrhing.   My envelope font persists in using '++headings' as its default.

This is a real time waster for us.

Is this a bug in Word 2010?

I think I discovered that you can select Change Document AFTER changing/submitting the Set As Default button to lock in the change.  In any case, after I did that, my desired font/size is coming up every time.

Figured it out.  When you go to the "envelope" window you have to change it in the "options" button which is to the left of the e-postage button.   Change it for the return address and the mailing address.  That worked for me.

The problem a lot of Word 2010 users have, and it may be limited to the 64-bit version, is that changes to the Normal Template do not get saved.  This is a bug in Word 2010 and has been documented in other forums.  While there is a workaround, it takes extra time.  So the simple steps to save settings, such as fonts on envelopes, does not work for us.  While the contributions here are helpful for other users, unfortunately, nothing will solve my problem until Microsoft fixes

You're over my head with this d)location box stuff - is that in the C: drive?

That seems like a lot of bullshit for a program that I paid hundreds of $ for.

I do have the normal template giving me the font I asked for, but the envelopes continue to have the default font that I hate.

I'm about to change over to using the "Open Office" system.  All this automatic stuff makes my work harder instead of easier.  I liked it better in the older programs where you could send the Office Assistant away.

I figured out (after trying everything listed here) that you cannot save a font change for envelopes if you are using a document from a previous version of Word.  I set up a letter from scratch by going to File, New, Blank Document.  When I went to print an envelope, the delivery address was (VOILA!) in the font we use in this office.  The only thing is that I do not know at what point in trying all of the suggestions on this web page that our font was saved.  What a pain.  Microsoft needs to get on the ball and get this bug fixed soon.  If not, I may talk my boss into replacing this program with WordPerfect or some other document processing software.  I wonder how may other bugs are contained in this program.

Thank you SO MUCH, LT! Microsoft seems bound and determined to make things more difficult for people who use Word as a WORD PROCESSING PROGRAM and not a graphics program.

If anyone out there reads this, there is a huge need in the world for a program which is simply a word processor and not a graphics program.

I work in the legal field and so much of the garbage which has been added to Word are not helpful. As well, I am so SICK of having to learn how to do things over and over again. I need to work very fast and I use a lot of the more advanced automated actions in Word to create automated documents for my office as well as speed my own work along, not to mention the keyboard shortcuts. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO REMOVE THEIR HANDS FROM A KEYBOARD TO USE A GODDANGED MOUSE!!

I despise what Microsft has done to Word. The ribbons are horrific.

Thank you so much LT1234!  I found this site when I had enough of changing the fonts on my envelopes and I'm so glad to finally have it fixed!  I'm with ScribbleT...the new version of Word is absolutely horrible and I hate having to basically learn new software every time they come out with a new version because they keep changing things that shouldn't be changed. The ribbons are awful and I still can't find anything after using it for several months.  I have an anxiety attack every time I use Word now because nothing is 2nd nature anymore and I have to search through these ridiculous non-user-friendly ribbons to find what I'm looking for.  Maybe I'm just too old of a dog to learn new tricks.  Thanks so much for giving me at least a little relief!

For many, this procedure becomes a challenge, because it doesn't always work. I spent a long time trying everything I could think of to get a default for the Normal document that was different than Calibri/11/1.5 spacing. Here's what worked for me. It is the location of the template that counts, not the properties of the template. I had to MOVE my modified template to c:\users\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates. There was no Normal template in the folder, until I moved it there. This worked for me, and I hope it works for you.

Seth I have experienced this problem since converting to 64-bit and it's driving me crazy as I use Keyboard shortcuts extensively and now I cannot save them. What is the workaround? Even if lengthly, it may be worth it to me. Thx

Way too much work for such a simple fix really. I agree, MS has to do something about Word 2007/2010. It stinks. But simply go to this URL, read the steps and simply....folks...it works: http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/3711

After trying all the rest, I tried the suggestion from cmwinters. This one worked for me in regards to the envelopes. What got me, was every time I would change the envelope's default font and then close out without printing, but not closing out the document entirely, it would revert to the old font. Annoying! But finding the Add-Ins (both pdf writers btw) and unchecking them for use in Word, my problem is solved! Thank you so much cmwinters for ending weeks of frustration :). - jflores

Thank you for this! I did this and it still didn't fix it seemingly... but then thinking of LT1234 mentioning It wouldn't work on previous versions, I thought maybe it needed to be a new document to take effect of  the new settings, although this was the the same version. Soooo I deleted the current document I fixed it with, created a new word doc, and the changes are in that one! I run a small business and just started printing the billing envelopes for a more professional look and was rethinking that seeing that I could hand print them 3 times faster if I had to redo My font every time lol. Silly how these little things in programs can be such a time waster. Thanks again guys!

Hi:I had the same tbl as you.  CMWINTERS  has the solution.  (see below)  Open Word 2010, click File,options,add-ins at the bottom find "Manage COM add-ins"    click Go   Uncheck all COM add-ins.  (or try one at a time until you find the trouble maker.Return to Word 2010 and change the default fonts for ENVELOPES.   However  after each "Save as defaault font under normal template" you must exit Word 2010. Then ckick "YES" when it asks you "You have changed the default font do you want to save these changes"?

If you don't exit Word 2010 after you change the default font it won't be saved.

For me it was the latest "ADOBE" update

SOLVED!
Credit given to LT1234 For finally putting this extremely vexing bug to bed, once and for all!

What was said:

I figured out (after trying everything listed here) that you cannot save a font change for envelopes if you are using a document from a previous version of Word.  I set up a letter from scratch by going to File, New, Blank Document.  When I went to print an envelope, the delivery address was (VOILA!) in the font we use in this office

Detailed in a nutshell:

What this means is to not try to change the default font in Word 2007/2010 from an existing document like something you use every day. Just go to File, New, Blank Document. Then type anything, real or BS letter. Or, to shortcut this, print the return address at the top. Skip a line (Press Enter once) and then type in the delivery address. Highlight the delivery address, to to the Mailings Tab, click the Envelopes button, and your delivery address should be in place because you highlighted it prior to clicking the Envelopes button. Now click the Options button to get to Envelope Options, there you can choose the Font for Delivery Address and again for Return Address. Do each one, set your preferences in each, click the Set As Default button on each, choose Yes to save for all envelopes based on the normal template. Print your envelope and close Word. From now on, ALL new documents will print envelopes with the new font settings that you chose for the Blank Document.

This all makes sense. Because Word treats saved documents as "custom documents" once saved. You wrote it, you formatted it the way you wanted to for that particular situation, and so it will NOT save this preference for all NEW documents because if anything, it would only save for that one saved document, NOT on NEW documents unless you perform these steps on a NEW BLANK DOCUMENT! Great job, LT12134. You may not be a software developer or programmer, but you did a darned good job on figuring this one out. Probably due to "Necessity Is The Mother Of All Invention". Thank You!!!

I tried the first thing, changing the font to set as default.  It did not work.  It reverted back to the original font size and font style that I was trying to change.  Then I tried your second advice.  Saved the macro template.  It still came up with old font when I reopened document.

This worked for me.  When I tried to exit Word, I did not get any message about do you want to change your font?  I just closed out the envelope address font changing windows with the font the way I wanted it and then exited Word.  When I re-opened it, the envelope address font I had previously set was still there.

I had tried the File/Options/Add-Ins solution but when I got to the final window, it was empty, i.e., no add-ins to uncheck or disable, so that didn't do it for me.

Of course, now that this has worked for me one time and I have posted this message, the NEXT time I open up Word and try to address an envelope, my newly-chosen default font will no longer be there.  I am convinced that Microsoft has a staff of people who have access to all of our computers and whose only function is to screw with us once we think we have solved something.
