Winword CPU usage during typing

Hi.

We have large RDS deployment with installed Office 2013 (curr. ver. 15.0.4701.1000 32-bit).

I have noticed a significant CPU load by Winword.exe process.

Further investigation showed that this load is generated during users typing. It takes up to 15% of core.

It seems that is not so much, but not on Terminal server.

Wondering, if Draft view is using (instead of Print Layout) CPU usage decreases.

Maybe, are there some settings to decrease CPU load during usage of Print Layuot (users don't want using Draft)?

Or some Hotfix?

Hi,

In regarding of the issue, I have a couple of questions.

1) Was this issue only occurred with Word?

2) Have you logged on with the local RDS to check if this issue still exists?

3) Have you tried to open a blank Word file in RDS and tested this issue?

This issue might be caused by some factors. Please try this method:

  • In Word 2013, open FILE | Options | Advanced
  • Scroll down to the "Display" section
  • Check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration (may already be disabled based on previous discussions on this and other threads.  Can also set a GPO to disable it.)

Hope it's helpful.

1. Only in Word, I can't replicate this issue with Notepad or Wordpad. CPU usage increases during typing and often it remains high after user stops typing.

2. There is no issue if I log on locally.

3. Doesn't matter blank document or not, issue still exists.

RDS farm hosts on VMWARE vSphere (VMware ESXi 5.1.0).

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 with latest updates.

Office 2013 15.0.4701.1000 32-bit.

Hello,

I recommend you use Windows Performance Toolkit to check which process caused this issue.

Hi,

As you said >>2. There is no issue if I log on locally.<< , this issue might not only related to Word, I recommend you post a new thread to RDS forum. You might get some ideas there.

I have installed Office 2010 on TS.

Word CPU usage is 2-3 times less than Office 2013.
