Windows Server 2008 - Windows Server Backup - VSS Plugin
Does anyone have a release date for the vss plugin for Exchange 2007 backups on Windows Server 2008 using Windows Server Backup?
August 11th, 2008 11:42pm
Hi,
Until now, Windows Server 2008 development team still is working on this issue. At present only 3rd party VSS backup is supported for backup of exchange server 2007 on windows server 2008
If any update is issued, I will inform you. Thank you for your understanding.

What happened to the release for summer? Or were Microsoft not meaning summer 2008? It is now Autmumn and still no built inbackup solution for Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007 this is a disgrace.

Is there a specific page or blogthat I can monitor for information regarding the release... when it happens?
I've run a number of searches but most of theresults center around the announcement back in June.
Thanks!

I don;t understandwhy this is so difficult since the backup works when used in Windows 2003.
I am using Active directory at Windows 2003 level. I cannot use ntbackup on the 2003 DC because it does not see the Exchange Server (on Windows 2008)
I need to have a backup of my mail server and I am reluctant to buy any other 3rd party solution.
I WANT TO USE ONLY MICROSOFT PRODUCTS.
We are in September now - is there any date in site for the plug-in?

Thanks for theresponse Allen!
Actually I had found that site but noticed that theblog was posted June 18th and the lastpermited usercomment was August 16th requesting any updated information... to which there was no response andposting to the blog was disabled. That lead me to question whetherit was still active and being monitored/updated or just dead. Any type of response on their part would be greatly welcomed, even if toreiterate "we're still working on it and willlet you know".
As is, I haven't seen an official updatefrom Microsoft regarding this since the announcement in June.

Hi,
I apologize for the inconvenience that brought to you.
Please be assured that the Program Team still are working on this issue. I will get the response to our discussion group, if any latest new is avaiable, I will let you know.
Thanks

You can appologise all you like on behalf of Microsoft but that is not going to back my server up running W2K8 and Exchange 2007. NTBACKUP should never have been left out of W2K8 we are supposed to be upgrading not downgrading.

As the starter of the original blog posts on this matter, I can't agree with you more about wanting this product to be released. But it's your job as a responsible admin not to install products together that dont have the functionality you require. Did you not know about this shortcoming before you deployed? Can't blame Microsoft for everything!

"Did you not know about this shortcoming before you deployed?"
No! I didn't
I am working for a small business and I do not have to much test equipment on 64 bit.
It never crossed my mind that Microsoft will release a server of any kind without a backup solution.
I am using continuous replication, but this is not a complete backup..
September 25th, 2008 5:06pm
Me neither. No idea that something small, beautiful and error free would be stripped.
I'm simply disappointed by the fact that Microsoft is leaving out a simple app to be covered by a third party.
Did Dell or HP ask for this?
I cannot think of any customer wanting to get rid of this feature.
And I would be really happy if someone could tell me a date when the plug-in is going to be released?

Yes it is the administrators responsibility to deploy products together providing the functionality required but it is also Microsofts responsibility to provide the functionality for their products if we were talking about another vendors product not working as expected then this blog would not exist. At no pointwould I expect Microsoft to remove one of the most important parts of Windows Server how well was the removal of NTBackup publicised for Windows 2008? Orhow well was the fact the backup solution provided by Windows 2008 would not be sufficient for Exchange 2007? I attended the technet roadshows promoting Windows 2008 nobody mentioned what it couldn't do, just how many admins especially in smaller environmentswould upgradeto Windows 2008 if all the true facts about the product were publicised as well as the new functions? Statements about releasing the solution of a plugin were made and in a specific time (Late Summer) which is long gone and still no solution. Are we in the wrong to complain?

This is becoming more than a little absurd. I understand that these things can take time, and that unexpected delays can occur, but I rather expect that more information might be provided than "we're working on it", because I know that already and knew it months ago. What sort of timeframe are we looking at, broadly? What is the most that you are able to tell us?

An update would be fantastic! If sbs can alreadybackup:
Files and folders
System State
Exchange
WSS (SharePoint)
SQL 2005 Instances
MSDE Instances
I think it reasonable to ask whenexchangebackup functionality is coming to server 08.

I guess we'll have to wait for Windows 7 the Server.
Kind of sad how all thoseposters on the MS Exchange Team Blogexpressed gratititude for the plug-in months ago and the plug-in is still not available and the thread on the blog is locked. If it wasn't locked I don't think the postings would be expressing gratitude any longer.
Is a downgrade from Windows 2008 Server/Exchange 2007 to SBS 2008 a supported path?

Allen,Is there any progress on this plug in? your previous post tells us nothing. It's been almost half a year since this thread began. Windows backup is Exchange aware on the small business edition of WIN2K8 SVR, surely porting the functionality to the enterprise edition cant be that hard.Looking forward to a post with some substance.

Well we are definately regretting choosing Server 2008 as the platform for our Exchange 2007 at this point. It is quite sad when Server 2003 is more functional than the new version, not to mention that the SBS version has it when the Standard Server version doesn't...

Perhaps Allen could advise us whom to contact at Microsoft regarding this matter.
Many of us have purchased 2008 only to find an essential function, backup, now excluded.
This is serious to many of us.
Thank you in advance.

I can NOT believe the lack of backup for Exchange 2007 on a 2008 server. I'll save the whining, but is it very hard to wipe my 2008 box, reload with 2003 and Exchange 2007 and finally remount the DB? I'm guessing no, but since this is a new install with very few production users, I might just do that. Please let me know your thoughts on downgrading to 2003.Thanks.

If you have a spare machine with 2GB RAM, you could add an additional server to your Exchange Organization (running either 2003 or 2008), then migrate the mailboxes and public folders off it, decommission the 2008 machine and rebuild it with 2003, the migrate the mailboxes and public folders back. You should be able to achieve zero downtime, and there is less risk of problematic restores etc, because the mailboxes remain online throughout the procedure. I've used this method to rebuild problematic but stilljust-about-workingservers in single server organizations without taking the Exchange system offline for more than a very limited amount of time, and it is infinitely better than the inevitable tension you get when you're rebuilding from a backup and hoping everything will mount properly!

Allen,
Thank you for the update. Considering so many of us have already switched to 2008, and we've upgraded into 2008 from 2003 or 2000, can you please let us know a serious time-frame for this update so we can pass along the information to the people who cut the checks back in May 2008 for Windows 2008? I think a serious time-frame would help.
Thank you again.

"We're planning on starting work on a backup solution in December - more to follow on that."
So we've been lied to repeatedly about how hard the team has been working on this, about how long the work would take etc, because no work has been undertaken at all!
This does not reflect well on any of the people involved in getting this information out to the public, and I am hopeful that the information on the EHLO blog is mistaken. If it isn't mistaken, then this situation is thoroughly risible.

Andrew - I posted the information on teh EHLO blog and it is correct, as it is my team that is doing the work. I don't know what you mean about being lied to repeatedly about this, as I have only commented on this the one time. I realize that we announced that we would do the work back in June, but the reality became that this work was prioritized behind a bunch of other things.
To be perfectly transparent about this - we do have the specification work done on this (done last summer) and are starting dev/test work inDecember, and will get it done as quickly as we can.

Kurt, what is the backup solution currently shipped with SBS 2008? Does it backup Exchange? If so, doesn't this mean the work is already done?

December 3rd, 2008 8:29pm
Andrew - I am the one who made the original announcement at Tech Ed in June. I was very clear when I told people how very early it was in the process, and that it would be quite some time before we had the plug-in released. AFAIK, no one (from Microsoft at least) has lied or posted anything remotely contrary to this.
We do realize that many people are anxiously awaiting the release of this plug-in. But as I said during my original announcement, if you need a solution now, do not wait for the plug-in. There are plenty of solutions available today for backing up Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008. The absence of a native Exchange backup solution in Windows 2008 should not have come as a surprise to anyone. We made this very clear starting almost a year before we released SP1.
I hope this helps clarify things.
December 3rd, 2008 8:50pm
I keep hearing how clear it was made that Windows 2008 lacked this functionality. Yet, it seems to me that the entire Exchange community (myself included) was shocked to find this missing. So our definition of "very clear" must me different. So if work is beginning now, I'll reiterate the question that was previously asked:What kind of timeframe are we looking at for the release?

December 3rd, 2008 9:46pm
Mike - the SBS team did implement a plug-infor this. In fact, we met with them to discuss some of the early design work and when we postponed doing it in late summer, they went ahead with their own plans, as it is clearly more targetted toward their customer segment (small businesses) than the overall Exchange market.
We are certainly evaluating their work in our plan.
If you've seen theirs and have feedback for ours, send it my way.
Thanks - Kurt

Hi Hiker_42,
This has been documented in numerous places since August 2007 when we released Beta 2 of SP1:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998848.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd233256.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995898.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123693.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996859.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997709.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998870.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124515.aspx
We also blogged about it in March of this year: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/03/05/448338.aspx, and later updated that blog in April.
We've also been talking about it in all of our technical presentations at TechEd, Interact, IT Forum, etc., and all related Webcasts.
I'm not sure how we could have been any clearer about this. If you have suggestions for us, please do pass them on.
In any event, we have no time frame to give for the release right now.

While it's been documented, itdoesn't appear to beposted up front in a place that is going to catch someone's eye....
What I mean is, whenever I go to purchase or upgrade a Microsoft product, I typically read up about the product on that products page or download a demo beforepurchasing it.
What's stated on the Exchange 2007 Features page is this:
Fast and Fewer Backups
Backups can be run against the copy of the production database on either the local server or passive server node, decreasing the performance impact on production. Continuous Replication also reduces the frequency of costly, full disk or tape backups currently used for disaster recovery.
At no point is there a disclaimer saying: Note, if you are running Exchange 2007 on Server 2008, you will need an additional backup solution.
I did partially read what's documented at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124558.aspx.
However, I'm kept too busy to have time to read through every single subitem under that tree.
The same applies to the blog, I simply haven't had time to read through one blog after another.
Those who did have time to actively and thoroughly beta test the product last year may have had more of a heads up and been more familiar with this, but it came as a surprise to me. Fortunately I was justsetting it up in a test environment. I didn't discover the lack of backup until I completed the installation and was running throught the post installation check. The first high priority alert that showed up was one refering to a backup not having been performed yet. I started digging around to try to find the backup utility and when I couldn't find it. It's onlyTHEN that I ran searches on Technet and eventually google before finding the post regarding your announcement back in June.
I would like to thank Kurt, Scott and Allen for coming on and posting some updates, even if they aren't excatly what we were hoping to hear.
It's greatlyappreciated!
December 5th, 2008 10:44pm
Hi CBMckoy,
We get millions of hits on our blog each month, and the blog post I cited was up there, quite prominently. And based on the feedback it got, I'd say it caught quite a few eyes. Plus, as I said, those were only some of the places we documented this. As an example, another place is in a Feature Article at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc296562.aspx. This feature article is linked directly from the Exchange TechNet home page at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/default.aspx, so this, too, is up front for all to see.
As to your comment on the features pages, that small blurb is really a marketing statement of functionality, and it is not trying to be a technical statement of functionality. For example, it also doesn't mention that, in order to back up the passive copy of storage groups, you need to use a VSS-based backup solution. So even if Windows Server Backup could still backup Exchange, you would still need DPM or a third-party VSS-based solution to backup the passive copy. There's no need for any disclaimer on that cited statement because the statement is true as written. It just does not go into the details. But, as I mentioned, there are numerous, numerous places where we did publish guidance.
I am sorry that this caught you or anyone else by surprise. We really have been trying very hard to make everyone aware of these issues.

Can we now that we've finished on the blame game can we focus on the issue? When is the planned release date for the VSS aware plugin for Windows backup?Any news beyond "we're working on it" would be welcome. Like most things from this company, we can expect a beta quality "solution" by sometime in 2010. We have a few hundred small business clients that we do outsourced IT for, and as it's come time to replace machines, we've been replacing Windows PCs with Macs, and Windows servers with Linux. It's really amazing how easy it is to setup a Windows domain on a Linux server these days. The end users can't tell a difference. CEO's love buying new servers now, since we pay 70-90% less than we used to, now that we don't have to pay for MS server licenses.

It's nice to see replies and apologees about this recovery-issue with Server 2008 Backup utility and Exchange 2007 SP1. Thank you. With this post however, I will try to direct your attention to the msexchangeteam.com-blog. It would be very nice and welcome by a lot of people if you clarified, on that blog (in a new blog-entry), why it's taking this long to produce the plugin and also explain that you're not just using the SBS-Teams backup-feature (which apparently works nicely?)and implementing it into Server 2008 Std, Ent& Datacenter editions. Or maybe you are ;)MSExchangeTeam.com-blog is probably more visited than this thread is, and will hence hit more eyes and hopefully appease the masses waiting for this plugin (which I know, you stated not to do).Otherwise, just want to say good work on Server 2008/Exchange 2007 - It hasn't given me large issues in the last year I've run it.

This is probably an obvious question - but I don't have a copy of Windows 2008 SBS around to try it.What happens if you copy the Windows Backup application from an SBS server onto a Windows 2008 server? The suggestion that we're dealing with a plugin, would suggest there's a single DLL somewhere to copy and maybe register.

Hello,Time is running and there is still no solution available. Is there any news about the developpement? This really need to get fixed as fast as possible!Thank you
March 9th, 2009 1:06pm
Please correct me if I am wrong but would the following steps be a temporary solution:Create a batch file that is a scheduled task to shutdown all exchange 2007 services, and after the services are shutdown, let the scheduled nightly backup run, and then after the nightly backup is done, start the exchange services? The backup service cant backup a live exchange, so if you could shutdown your exchange services for 30-45 minutes lets say from midnight to quarter to 1 the windows server backup should be able to backup exchange because its not live? the scheduled tasks would look something like this:11:55PM Scheduled Batch script shutdown all exchange services12:00AM Scheduled windows server backup runs1:00AM Scheduled Batch script start all exchange servicesWouldn't that work? its all automated and exchange is offline at a time when use is limited. It should work for the time being until the VSS plugin is out.

To have even shipped a product without a default way to back it up - seriously - smacks of incompetence. How, may I ask, did Microsoft backup their Exchange servers? I suspect they either had to have another company come in and help them with the solution or they kludge up a scripting solution and don't provide it to anyone else. What a great situation you developed - can't even support your own RTM products fully. Now we can all pay thousands extra for system center to get the defacto functionality that we've had since Exchange 4.0 shipped 11+ years ago. And some people wonder why we're all upset. As an excuse for it being 2 years now and a service pack after the product was released, you simply offer thatit was delayed due to it being"prioritized behind higher things". Really? Higher priorities than ensuring your customer's data is safe out of the box? Wow. You really let me into some insight into Microsoft's priorities there. Sad.Do tell us all what priorities for the past 2 years now have kept asimple default onlinebackup solution from being implemented in your FLAGSHIP communication product. I really want to hear this. Please tell us all why you can't just include the already working SBS version or allow us to simply install the previously working Windows 2003 ntbackup on Windows 2008? Please tell us how difficult it is to easily backup every other application you offer BUT this one, well,it's just too much to ask. Why does it takes so incredibly long to fix a solution that was already working very well out of the box in Windows NT, 2000, and 2003 - but is now still impossible 2+ years laterafterwe "upgraded" to the"latest and greatest" OS? No, really, I want to heara few of these priorities. It sounds like someonescrewed up royallyand what you've posted so far is not sufficient or acceptable information.Your customers are looking for solutions. All I see here is delays, excuses, and a really elitist attitude about knowing what your customers want and need without caring what they are telling you they want and need.Really. No backup solution? Comeon guys.Notes has online backup included. This situation is pathetic for Exchange. As other posters have begged, pleaded, and asked nicely time and time again without any response so far - when is this toolset plug-in going to be released? We DESERVE a specificanswer. Your customers who have paid you millions for these products DESERVE an answer....and don't even get me started on what you did with exmerge...lol.:)
March 25th, 2009 11:51pm
I feel like every non-Microsoft user above - it's simply "incredible" that Microsoft keep on and on creating applications and services which has features which most people don't ask for...but not the vital features we all need. Not including a real working backup solution in Windows Server 2008...not able to forgive that one. And I can't forgive anyone who has a part in not prioritizing the backup solution for Exchange 2007 either.
Reading the posts above spawned an interest in searching for a non-Microsoft AD-aware mail/public folder solution...I wonder if I'm the first to do so?
PS: My IE8 keeps on telling me to type in between 4 and 60.000 letters before submitting. I had to start a virtual PC with IE in order to submit anything...

ANY update to this???? It's going to be almost a year that this much needed solution was proposed. What's the deal???
April 1st, 2009 8:06am
It's sad that almost a year after the original announcement we haven't heard any updated information. Then today I noticed the announcement for the release of Exchange Server 2010 Beta. http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/2010/en/us/overview.aspxMy question now is a VSS Backup solution still in the works or has this project been dropped??? Also will Exchange 2010 include such backup ability???
As for the VSS, I actually couldn't wait for this to materialize so I took the recommendation and purchased DPM 2007.
That has been a complete failure so far.I have to admit that it is the easiest backup solution I've used, but doesn't appear to be fully working for me. If the DPM server ever reboots, it comes back up showing the replica as being inconsistent and I have to manually perform a consistency check multiple times before it indicates that backup as being OK. It works fine for a time after that. Eventually, however, Ive notice that while it shows a status of OK the date on the last recovery point is at the time of the last express backup the day before not the every two hour sync period in between.
(currently trying to research this behavior) I would still like to see the VSS as some of our customers are small businesses and haven't budgeted for separate backup servers/software.

This is turning into vaporware. Add it to the list with "Duke Nukem Forever"Mike Crowley: MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator

Vaporware is exactly what this is.This situation is sodepressing to those of us who make a living supporting small businesses with Microsoft products. It's as if MS is walking away from the small business market. Yes, I know that's what SBS is aimed at - but SBS doesn't meet my clients' requirements most of the time as it has too many limitations. There's something wrong here. Something completely wrong. Releasing a product like Exchange without including the ability to back up the data it stores isbeyond idiotic. In fact it's far easier to believe that this was intentional and at some level malicious. It's as if MS is trying to shake off the low end of the market by crippling their products. What makes this all the worse isMicrosoft's stringing us along with the promise that they will - someday - release a VSS plugin for Exchange 2007. It's insulting that Exchange 2010 is entering beta when Exchange 2007 remains an essentially unfinished product. For goodness sakes, take a couple of developers off the Exchange 2010 team and make them do the plug in. Let 2010 slip a couple of days. This isn't rocket science.

Hi,The latest update: Now Windows Server Backup support Exchange backupsExchange 2007 Service Pack 2 includes a VSS plug-in for Windows Server Backup to support Exchange backups. Once SP2 is installed, you can use Windows Server Backup to back up and restore your Exchange 2007 SP2 databases. The new plug-in is delivered in the form of a single executable called WSBExchange.exe. This plug-in is automatically installed by SP2 on all Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers. The plug-in enables Windows Server Backup to be able to make Exchange-aware VSS backups.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee221150.aspxThanksAllen

Do you have a solution for scheduling automated Exchange backups with the VSS plugin? Can you provide us with the settings to automate backups using a Scheduled Task?
Thank you.

you can try to make a schedule with this command and run it every day, also disable any backup software you use, if you use any :) %windir%\system32\wbadmin.exe start backup -backupTarget:E: -allCritical -vssFull -quiet E = target disk with backup copies it seems to work
