In windows XP we had this option to select file types and on doc file type in Advanced Settings we can check open in the same browser window which made word document to open in browser.

In Windows XP, you mean click "Tools" > "Folder Options" in Windows Explorer, then select the "File Types" tab, right?
For Windows 8, to open Office documents in Internet Explorer instead of the Office programs, you can try to specify Internet Explorer as the default program for a specific extension (e.g. .docx) in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set
Associations.
Or you can configure this by editing the Windows registry. All entries specific to file type associations are stored in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
Locate the subkey for the specific Office document type, then add or edit follow value:
Value name: BrowserFlags
Data type: REG_DWORD
