Windows 8 file types

Hi

I would like to know if there is an option to open office documents (docx, xslx etc) in browser. In windows XP we had this option to select file types and on doc file type in Advanced Settings we can check open in the same browser window which made word document to open in browser. I'm wondering if there is an option like this in windows 8. If it is not possible through a GUI settings is it possible through some registry changes? I have this requirement to open docx, xslx, mpp files in browser.

Appreciate any help. T

Rani,

The forum is for developers. I'd recommend asking non-programming questions on the Office IT Pro or Microsoft Community forums instead.

Hi,

In Windows XP, you mean click "Tools" > "Folder Options" in Windows Explorer, then select the "File Types" tab, right?

For Windows 8, to open Office documents in Internet Explorer instead of the Office programs, you can try to specify Internet Explorer as the default program for a specific extension (e.g. .docx) in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations.

Or you can configure this by editing the Windows registry. All entries specific to file type associations are stored in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes

Locate the subkey for the specific Office document type, then add or edit follow value:

Value name:  BrowserFlags
Data type:   REG_DWORD

Please refer to this KB article for the subkeys of some common Office document types, and the corresponding BrowserFlags value:
