Windows 8.1 notifications / Outlook 2013

Hi all,

I've recently cleanly installed Windows 8.1 Pro and Outlook 2013 Professional Plus. I've noticed new email notifications hang / freeze / don't respond, when I hover over and click them. This occurs roughly 1 in 4 times.

Not working:

Working:

Difference = X top right of notification and clicking does nothing.

As you can see from the above images, as I've hovered over the email in the top image it does not show an X, whilst in the bottom image it does.

More importantly when I clicked on the email in the top image nothing happened. The notification just stayed there and after approx 45 seconds disappeared.

Hovering over the email in the bottom image showed an X and left clicking it bought the email up.

I've attempted to install KB2836988 as detailed here:

Notifications freeze in the notification area of Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2838015

But it errors with:

Windows Update Standalone Installer

This update is not applicable to your computer

Which doesn't surprise me as the System Requirements state:

Supported Operating System
Windows 8

No mention of 8.1. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

David

Hi,

Can you find any error about this hang in Event Logs?

Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter.

Browse to Windows Logs -> Application, check whether there is any error message in the list.

In addition, have you noticed if this issue occurs to the Alerts from other applications? The Desktop Alerts of Outlook 2013 in Windows 8.1 is based on Windows 8.1 Modern UI notifications(PC settings -> Search and apps -> Notifications ), if this is not only with Outlook Desktop alerts, it's more related to Windows Notifications settings.

Kindly let me know the result.

I haven't seen anything so far in the event logs and it hasn't cropped up with other Windows 8 notifications.

Rather than something caused the issue, I'd say it's not perfectly designed that caused this experience. I also meet the problem some time ago somehow it's gone now, make sure Windows 8.1 is up to date.

Have you tested in Outlook Safe Mode? RUN > "outlook.exe /safe", with all add-ins disabled, check if this still hangs.
