Windows 2008 to Windows 2008 R2 in situ upgrade with Exch 2007
I am currently running Exchange 2007 SP2 Rollup 4 on Server 2008 Enterprise edtn. Now as I update all my other servers to Windows 2008 R2 I am wondering if it is feasible to install Server 2008 Enterprise R2 over the top of original Server 2008 Enterprise on the mail server so that all of the servers will be R2 and the forest & domain can be elevated to 2008 R2 rather than 2008. I understand that Exch 2007 can now run on 2008 R2 ok it's just a question of whether I can do an in situ upgrade rather than have to borrow a server and migrate it off, rebuild and migrate it back.I.T. Hi If you are planning to upgrade windows server 2008 to 2008 R2 with exchange 2007sp2 it is not supported. For reference please check this links.. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/supported-applications.aspx http://www.howexchangeworks.com/2009/09/exchange-2007-sp2-2008-r2-whats-deal.html Thanks Mhussain

Installing Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 R2 is not supported at this point. You need to wait for SP3. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/11/30/453327.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee338574(EXCHG.80).aspx Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks for those links, pretty much as I thought. Looking at the article - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee338574(EXCHG.80).aspx It shows that Server 2008 R2 forest & domain function levels ARE ok with Exch 2007 SP2. Now I didn't think that you could raise the forest/domain funtion levels to a level higher than the lowest server. OR is it because the Exch 2007 is on a member server rather than a DC that you can raise the function levels to R2? By the time I get around to doing this I expect Exch 2007 SP3 will be out so that it will be compatible. The question still begs though, can you install 2008 R2 over the top of an existing 2008 server and get away with it? I am trying to avoid borrowing a server and migrating the Exch 2007 to it, wiping the original and building it from scratch and migrating mail boxes back. Normally I am dead against in-situ upgrades, I'd NEVER normally do it, but as nothing else runs on that physical server I am prepared to give it a go.I.T. Manager International House London

Yes. You can run Exchange 2007 in Windows 208 R2 Active Directory environment. Since Exchange 2007 is not support on a Windows 2008 R2 server, I won’t recommend upgrading the OS.
