Windows 2003 Server Standard x64 with Exchange 2007 Enterprise SP1 upgrade to Windows 2008
Hello I currently have a Windows 2003 Server Standard x64 running Exchange 2007 SP1, currently I have an issue with my OOO not working and Microsoft Support informed me my environement is no longer supported They recommended that I upgrade to Windows 2008 Is this a straight forward process and is there anything post install I need to do once I've upgraded to Windows 2008?

Hi, You can't perform an upgrade. You will need to build a new Windows 2008 server, install Exchange on this server and then move mailboxes and public folders to this server. Leif

Hello Thanks for your reply. Would i be able to backup and restore my IIS settings onto the new exchange Server along with my certificate so in order to retain my OWA setup. Also how would this affect inbound and outbound email routing whilst I was setting up another Exchange Server in the LAN as I wouldn't want any downtime for my users whilst doing this and how would I decomission my existing exchange server when moving over to the new Server or would I keep two Exchange Servers in my LAN ?

Hi, I don't believe that you can backup / restore the IIS settings (2 completely different IIS versions). You can export / import the certificate. Mail should be routed between both servers so it shouldn't matter where the mail comes in / goes out. When everything has been moved to the new server (including mail routing etc) you can decommision the old server. This should also help: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrdeploy/thread/1b65b57e-db1c-45b2-afbb-8cbeed48401d Leif

Hi, For certificate, I think you can try to export and import. How to Export an SSL Certificate http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb310778(v=exchg.80) By the way, how did you publish your OWA to outside? From ISA or port mapping? When new exchange server join to the orgnization, it will not affected the mail flowing. I think you can try to move the configuration for CAS(A record for OWA) and HUB(MX and A record) to the new server. and then move mailbox to the new server. Also OAB generation server should be move to the new server. Xiu Zhang TechNet Community Support
