Why might the Office Upload Center icon suddenly appear in my Windows notification area?

Ive been running a Click-to-Run version of Office 2013 on my 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 system for about a year now.  Im in the habit of looking frequently in my Windows 7 notification area (or system tray) at least once every time I log on.  A few days ago, I was surprised to discover the Microsoft Office Upload Center icon in my notification area.

Having used Office 2013 for about a year now, why might the Office Upload Center icon have suddenly appeared in my notification area?  Did I inadvertently start something?

Other information that might help identify the cause:

  • My Windows 7 system has three user IDs for logging on, but the Office Upload Center appeared in the notification area of only one of the user IDs, not in the notification areas of the other two user IDs.
  • I dont use OneDrive (SkyDrive) or SharePoint, and I had never even heard of the Office Upload Center before this incident.
  • I did look in the Startup tab of msconfig, but there was no entry to start the Office Upload Center.

Thankfully, the icon was easy to remove from the notification area.  I went into Office Upload Center Settings and unticked/unchecked the appropriate box.  The icon hasnt appeared again and, according to the list of processes in Task Manager, no occurrences of MSOSYNC.EXE, CSISYNCCLIENT.EXE, OSPPSVC.EXE or MSOUC.EXE are running.
