Why is my header/footer missing when I mail merge in Word 2013?

I have just converted from Word 2007 to 2013 and now I am having an issue with my mail merge document. My mail merge document has our company letterhead set up in the header/footer. When I finish the mail merge by selecting 'Edit Individual Documents' using an Outlook contacts list - the first page is missing the header/footer but all the others are correct.

I use this document and mail merge every few days so this is going to cause me much grief if it can not be resolved.

I have never experienced this issue before and I consider myself an advanced Word user.

Has anyone else had this issue and knows how to fix it?

Hi,

According to your description, my understanding is that the first page of the Word document lost the header/footer, but the other page display well.

If it is, please try the methods and check if it is helpful:

Click on File>Options>Display and make sure that there is a tick mark in the box for "Show white space between pages in Print Layout view."

Then, do you use DOC file (Create in Word 2007) or DOCX file?If you use Doc file, I recommend you convert it to DOCX file to test.

If I misunderstand something, please let me know.

I do daily mail merges of a 2-page letter that has the letterhead in the header/footer (and has a continuation header/footer for the second page). This was developed in Word 2003 and ported to Word 2010 and Word 2013. I have had no problems with Word 2007, 2010, or 2013. I did have a problem for a time when the result document was saved in .docx format in Word 2007 and 2010 but some update fixed that.

A suggestion for a work-around. Create a dummy first record and discard the first letter. This is not a solution but something you can do while you figure out what is going on.

I had the same issue after messing around with header/footer options. Then I enabled "display all characters" after the merge, I could see the logo on the first page, it was somehow considered invisible by Word. I am still trying to fix it but hope the info helps.

I fixed my issue, here is the steps:

1. Show "display all characters" in the main document.

2. Merge as usual.

3. You will still see all the invisible character marks and the logo should still be missing.

4. Hide "display all characters" and then the logo shall reappear.

Hope this also fixes your issue as well.

I tried the suggested to show all characters and then hide them after the merge. It did not work.

Did you try the suggestion of a dummy first record?

Hi,

I think I just solved it as I was having trouble as you were but in Word 2010, the first page didn't show the letter head but was visible on every other page.

You need to put a 'Continuous Break' before your address block.  Our letterhead is over on the right side so I have to make sure the address block begins slightly lower than the letterhead to enable the continuous break to be put in.

Try this and let me know how it goes!
