Why doesn't the English Dictionary app work? (Word 2013)

I purchased Microsoft Office 365 over a month ago and it's just bothering me how the built-in English dictionary app doesn't work.  I always get a message that says, "Sorry, we couldn't load the app because your browser version isn't supported. Click here for a list of supported browsers."

I use Opera, which isn't listed as a supported browser BUT I actually have Mozilla Firefox 25.0 set as my default browser, which I assume should be supported because the minimum is listed as Firefox 12. If it matters, I don't have Internet Explorer on my laptop. I also have the Windows 8 operating system.

I'm just not really sure on what else that I could do to get the English Dictionary app to work. I'm pretty sure that it worked during my free trial..

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks! :)

Hi,

As the error message,it seems that the issue was caused by the browser version. I recommend you use IE to test the issue. Could you remanber which browser did you use during free version?

Please find the IE in below path and set the IE as default browser.

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1}

If the English Dictionary app works fine, please use IE as default browser.

If it still works fail, please follow the link to re-install the App:

Yes. It seems as if the problem is that I don't have Internet Explorer installed, despite the fact that Mozilla Firefox is listed as a supported browser. It would have been nice if Microsoft Word came with a functioning dictionary. The reliance on 'apps' is becoming very annoying.

Thanks for the response anyway.

Nope I get that error when my default browser is IE11 which is listed as being above minimum requirements. I agree with Louisa that the "App" reliance is nonsense - Microsoft you are not Google, innovate not imitate!
