Why does Exchange 2003 OWA / ActiveSync inexplicably stop working from time to time?
I have Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 Enterprise. From time to time, Exchange would just stop working. Usually OWA is inaccessible, ActiveSync to iPhones loses connection. For the most part, internal Outlook access still works. Then the only thing you can do is reboot the entire server and that usually solves the problem - until it repeats the same symptoms next time. I see A LOT of Event 1023 POP3SVC errors in Event Log coming from one particular POP3 user: Error 0x7da occurred while rendering message 000a-00000983ea18 for download for user blabla@mydomain.com This account was set up for an outside company to gather emails for auditing purposes. From what I can remember, these POP3SVC errors have always been there. We've always attributed them to this particular outside user just creating these errors because there is something in their computer configuration that is causing this. Is it possible there is a link between these POP3SVC errors and the random shutdowns of Exchange's OWA and ActiveSync from time to time? If so how and how to address this? Just for FYI - Symantec Endpoint Protection is also running on the Exchange server. There is also Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange installed but I think its license has expired so it is not actively protecting.

IIS logs should answer us something Start - run - logfiles - Enter W3svc1 folder Get the log dated when you had this problem Check we find something ? Pop3svc - Ignore that error Satheshwaran Manoharan | Exchange 2003/2007/2010 | Blog:http://www.careexchange.in | Please mark it as an answer if it really helps you

Restarting the IIS Admin service doesn't fix the problem? >I see A LOT of Event 1023 POP3SVC errors in Event Log coming from one particular POP3 user: > >Error 0x7da occurred while rendering message 000a-00000983ea18 for download for user blabla@mydomain.com That's a problem with rendering a message. The 0x7da is one of those error codes that means "Oops! I didn't expect THAT to happen!". It's prbably not related to your problem at all. >This account was set up for an outside company to gather emails for auditing purposes.
