When do the Exchange 2010 powershell commandlets become available
We are preparing to roll out Exchange 2010. I would like to begin using the Exchange 2010 powershell commandlets before we install our first Exchange 2010 server. Could I just install the Exchange Management Console on a Windows 7 box without installing Exchange 2010? Would that make the commandlets available? I am planning on performing the AD and Domain prep steps. Thanks in advance for any help. Muskie

Depends what commandlets you want to use. Some of them are dependant on the version of Exchange the mailbox is against, some are not. There is no single answer to this. The management tools are largely useless to you with Exchange 2010 servers to run them against. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

If you are just wanting them to run the AD and domain prep steps, it is not required. You can do this from a regular (elevated) command prompt.Tim Harrington | MVP: Exchange | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010, MCITP: Lync 2010, MCITP: Server 2008, MCTS: OCS | Blog: http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com | Twitter: @twharrington

Hi, You need to import module ActiveDirectory or add an Import-Module ActiveDirectory command to your Windows PowerShell profile. Thanks.

Thanks, Simon. You raise good points. I am rewriting some of our VBScripts for adding new users. I was wanting to use some of the xxx-Mailbox commandlets, but your point is that they won't work with Exchange 2003 (my version) anyway. MuskieMuskie

Thanks for you comment, Alan. Is the ActiveDirectory module you refer to made available after installing the Exchange 2010 Exchange Management Console? If not, where do they come from? I am currently using the Quest AD commandlets. MuskieMuskie
