What were the limitations in Exchange Server 4.0?
I would like to know the advantages of Exchange 4.0 over Exchange 1.0 and its limitations.

Is this 1997?
Exchange 1.0 didn't exist.

Ok, then let me consider adopting Exchange 5.0 when it comes out. I hear Microsoft is working hard on it and it may change the landscape of email forever, displacing these UNIX based servers in the Enterprise. Of course, most people think that's about
as likely as that other new technology, VoIP, making a dent in the mission critical Digital PBX space. :D

You are asking about products are that over 15 years old, so that is why no one is taking your seriously. I expect most people using this site have never even heard of them.
This page at Wikipedia goes in the products in more depth.

Exchange 4.0 was the 1st release of Microsoft Exchange Server. Before
that, there was release 3.x of Microsoft Mail.
I might still have a copy of Exchange 4.0 from 1996 in the basement. I
dumped the MS Mail stuff two years ago. :-)

Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0 was released in 1997.

Ahhh . . . I get it -- messages from the past. Exchange 5.5 was a much
better release. You should wait for that one to be released.

Haha Sembee... that Wiki page says that both Exchange 1.0 and 4.0 did not support SMTP. SMTP was first incorporated into Exchange in 5.0.

TechEx - you cannot use Exchange 4.0 and 1.0 on the internet. Both of these do not support SMTP.Clint Boessen MVP - Exchange Server, MCSE, MCITPx4, Dip Network Engineering

Exchange 4.0 could use SMTP, too. You just had to pay extra for the
license to use the connector.

Do the initials "BTDT" bring anything to mind?
The software was delivered on a 3-1/2 inch "floppy" disk (at least it
wasn't on a 5-1/4" media!).

Yep. It's right there on page 32 of the Microsoft Exchange Server
(E-Mail Server with Integrated Groupware) Installation Guide (c)1996:
"Internet Mail
Use the Internet Mail Connector to connect two Microsoft Exchange
Sever sites or to connect a site to an Internet mail system."

I think the biggest limitation would be that I doubt you could even install it on any modern OS. I suppose you could install it on NT4, but really, is this a joke? I honestly have a real copy of exchange 4.0, box and all, but it's a seriously LOL product.Exchange
really wasnt any good until 5.5, and even then was seriously limited. Despite all the haters, I think the 2007 product is good, and my company has no desire to move.
