And by "point" you mean? Are you trying to configure Outlook with that profile? Or are you trying to send messages to that address? Or?
It's possible to use the default domain to configure Outlook, just make sure that you use the correct Username and password (the username *can* be different from the primary email address, so double-check on that). If you have any trouble with configuring the profile, it's most likely due to network connectivity or restrictions applied on the PC. In any case, providing some more details will allow us to guide you better.
I mean how do I set up my Outlook installation?
Every guide and walk through on the Microsoft support pages and everywhere else that I can find assume that you want to use your own domain. I don't. For the specific needs I have, all I need is the default domain. How do I access mail on mydomain.onmicrosoft.com
using Outlook? Where does the Outlook application need to point to in order to retrieve that mail?

It *should* resolve, here's for example mine:
PS C:\> Resolve-DnsName michev.onmicrosoft.com Name Type TTL Section PrimaryServer NameAdministrator SerialNumber ---- ---- --- ------- ------------- ----------------- ------------ michev.onmicrosoft.com SOA 1 Authority ns1.bdm.microsoftonline.com msnhst.microsoft.com 2007070100 PS C:\> Resolve-DnsName michev.onmicrosoft.com -Type MX Name Type TTL Section NameExchange Preference ---- ---- --- ------- ------------ ---------- michev.onmicrosoft.com MX 3600 Answer michev.mail.protection.outlook.com 0 PS C:\> Resolve-DnsName autodiscover.michev.onmicrosoft.com -Type CNAME Name Type TTL Section NameHost ---- ---- --- ------- -------- autodiscover.michev.onmicrosof CNAME 44225 Answer autodiscover.outlook.com
And you should be able to configure your account in Outlook using that address. If it's not working for you, run the test from ExRCA (http://aka.ms/rca) -> Office 365 tab -> Outlook Autodiscover and tell us what the results are.

outlook.office365.com did not work.
Running the Outlook Autodiscover tool on aka.ms/rca works. However, when I look through the output, here's the details of what it had to do in order to succeed:
1. It fails to resolve the hostname.
2. It succeeds instead, in resolving autodiscover.mydomain.onmicrosoft.com.
3. It fails when checking whether port 443 is listening and open.
4. It succeeds using the HTTP Redirect method.
The Outlook clients seems unwilling to do all of that and just fails as soon as resolving DNS fails.
Here's my going theory:
1. The person who set up the account used caps, so when I log on to the portal and look at the domains I own that shows up as MYDOMAIN.onmicrosoft.com rather than mydomain.onmicrosoft.com.
2. Microsoft failed to do any input validation or sanitation and went ahead and created a domain name that can't actually be resolved.
3. I'm stuck with a non-working domain name.
Could that be what's going on here? If not, what else can I look into?

Autodiscover has different endpoints, the ExRCA tool tests several of those and it's normal to fail on some. As long as the end result is success, we can rule out general Autodiscover related issues. It's more of a client issue. Easy way to check on this is to run the same test from Outlook: hold the CTRL key, right-click on Outlook's icon in the tray, select Test E-Mail autoconfiguration, enter the username and password, clear the two "Guessmart" checkboxes and run the test.
As for the case, DNS is not case sensitive, but the client implementation might be. You will have no trouble running the same test with capitalized domain name on ExRCA for example.
