What identity should default application pool be running under on Exchange 2010 CAS boxes?
I'm troubleshooting another issue on my CAS boxes, and noticed that the default application pool (DefaultApppool) is running under a domain account that is created by us for running our own web pages. None of the three people on our Exchange team remember changing this. I'm wondering what the identity should be? I assume it should be one of the built in accounts? LocalService LocalSystem NetworkService ApplicationPoolIdentity This app pool runs the /Rpc, /RpcWithCert, and Root Application applications. I had an issue with the Default Website and DefaultAppPoool running as ApplicationPoolIdentity on one Exchange 2010 box. In this insance, the forest had been migrated over time from Exchange 2000, 2003, 2007, to 2010. However, on a fresh 2010 forest with no legacy email, the default worked fine. For the upgraded forest, OWA was working, but Out of Office, Offline Address Book, and AutoDiscover weren't (though everything appeared to be correctly configured). The solution was to change the Default Website DefaultAppPool from ApplicationPoolIdentity to either NetworkService or LocalSystem. Then restart W3SVC.
