What happens when database drive is full but database has free space?
OK, here is the scenario. Database files (not log files) are on a drive by themselves. This phyisical drive is almost full. The database itself has tons of free space in it. What happens when the phyisical drive fills up if the database still has lots of free space after the online defrags are done. Thank you, Josh

IS service stops and fails to start until it has sufficient disk space to mount the DB.

So even if there is plenty of free space in the database it will not take advantage of it? An offline defrag would be very hard to pull off in the short term. Thank you, Josh

if you're not out of drive space yet, and there is room in the edb's, the server could stay running as the edb's won't expand until you consume all of the available whitespace. however you're running very high risk in doing so as you can easily consume all of the whitespace and cause the edb's to grow. if they consume available disk space, the stores will dismount. your best bet is to either move the edb's to a drive with sufficent drive space, add more capacity to that drive, or defrag the edb's. You can use a networked drive if you are unable to add another drive to the physical server.
