What does Exchange Alias actually do
Hi AllWe are running Exchange 2003 Sp2.In ADUC, you can see that each (mail enabled) user has an 'Alias'.I've searched and searched and have no idea what this actually does - can someone enlighten me? ;)Cheers

Pancamo,An Alias is just an alternate delivery method for a mailbox. For example, I could have Mark@domain.com as well Mark.Morow@domain.com. I wouldn't want to have 2 accounts, just 1 mailbox that accepts mail for 2 different addresses. You can also do aliases for the domain as well, Mark@domain.com and Mark@domain.org. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822447http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Implementing-Custom-Recipient-Policies.html Mark Morowczynski|MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP: Enterprise Support|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Hi Pancamo,Are you talking about an Alias field in Exchange General tab of any mail enabled objects?~ AD attribute name of Alias is "mailNickname".~ Alias is the identifier for various Exchange processes as like in AD,logonname.~ All mail enalbled objects should have alias field populated to recognized as a mail enabled otherwise it is not considered as a mail enabled.~ RUS will first search for mailNickname and homeMDB attributes while identifying an mail enabled object to populate various attributes based on recipient policies.~ You would have seen that various ldap searches start with &(mailnickname=*) to find all mail enabled objects.Quick References:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997251(EXCHG.65).aspxhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/253838Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
