What does 'ReadingModePrintedPage' do and how to set it.

It was suggested in 'Microsoft Office for Developers" that I might find some assistance for my problem in this forum.

We have an application that runs Word as an automation object. It has been running satisfactorily for many years but now we've hit a problem with Word 2013. This is associated with an undocumented item in the registry options for word at:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\ReadingModePrintedPage
If present, and set to 1, AND if the document is opened in ReadView, it prevents our application from accessing any properties such as 'ShowHiddenText' or 'TrackRevisions' giving the error 800A11FD and an appropriate message.

I appreciate this isn't a developers forum, but I have drawn a blank on what 'ReadingModePrintedPage' is and
does. So I am wondering if anyone in this forum has come across this setting and can answer:

1) The purpose of the 'ReadingModePrintedPage' flag.
2) How to set/unset it in Word 2013
3) How to set/unset it via the COM interface.
4) If there is any documentation, where can it be found.

Also, a related query, can anyone define the rules for when a document is opened in ReadView. Our experiments tell us the if:
  a) Only a single instance of Word 2013 is open
and
  b) It has a document open that is in ReadView
and
  c) The instance of Word 2013 is closed with its document unsaved and open so no instance od Word 2013 is now open
and
  d) A different Word document is opened by double clicking the document.
Then that document will be opend in ViewMode irrespective of prior use. This can potentially muck up our application, as described above.

I believe the registry value you are referring to controls the "Column Layout" and "Paper Layout" options on the View menu in Reading Mode (these options are found under View
