Want to send e-mails using three different domains but not working
Hello, My Exchange Server 2003 was configured by technicians to recieve e-mails from my host for domain1.com, domain2.com and domain3.com. This works well and uses the POP3 Connector. Unfortunately, the way it is configured only allows me to send e-mail back out using one default smtp, e.i. user@domain1.com.I can changethe default smtp domain, but it still will only sendfrom one domain. We need to be able to send out e-mail using user@domain2.com and user@domain3.com as well. Right now, the way it is working, is by letting e-mails of all our three domains be retrieved by exchange and delivered to Exchange mailboxes, yet for sending we have a mixed setting configured in Outlook 2003, where all mail sent through default domain1.com is handled by Exchange Server, but e-mail sent through domain2.com and domain3.com is handled by POP3 accounts configured only to send. This does not seem secure to me, and even worst, it forces me to have an acces rule in ISA Server 2004 allowing all users permission to use smtp from internal to external. I have tried limiting the application of this rule to only a select security group (users who actually have external e-mail accounts at our webhosting company), but then the POP3 accounts in Outlook 2003 for domain2.com and domain3.com will not send e-mail. The only way it works is if All users are allowed to send POP3 e-mail. The techies I hired to install all of the servers and configure them could not find another way out. I don't like these settings and would like to change them. I have looked into using the smtp connector and create virtual hosts to set up my webhosting e-mail server as a smart host, but I am getting confused as to whether this is what I am looking for. There seems to be so many different scenarios, I am not sure if any of those apply to me or not. I definetely want to use my webhosting e-mail server to receive and sent all e-mail as an extra layer of protection. I do not want to host e-mail or website on my server due to security reasons and cost of bandwidth. We just installed Windows SBS 2003 Premium Edition R2; I know this only supports one domain but I was told that I could handel incoming and outgoing e-mail for several domains. Your help is greatly appreciated on pointing me to the right configuration, if there is one. Thank you, Ikis

I see the Dilemma that the techs were in when they set this up. Honestly, and you will not like the answer, they should have not configured the POP3 accounts. Most consultants will do what you ask them to do, because, well.. you are paying them to. What they should have done is let you know that Exchange does not support the configuration you are looking for. You can have multiple inbox address, which it sounds like are setup correctly. You can change the default SMTP address, which sounds like it is working. But, there is no "I want to send as domain2 for this e-mail, domain3 for the next". If I had to set this up, and there was no way to convince you to just use one outbound address and be done with it, I would setup an account for each address. I would then forward the e-mail from the other two accounts to the one you always use. I would then change the security on the other account to allow you to "Send As" that person. I would then add the "From" field into your Outlook client. If you received an e-mail for jdoe@domain2.com, and you were reading it from johndoe@domain1.com, you would hit reply, and add jdoe@domain2.com to the from field.
