W2K AD to W2K8 AD migration and E2K to E2K7 migration
Hi, I have a customer who wants to migrate from Windows Server 2000 AD to Windows Server 2008 AD and also migrate from Exchange Server 2000 to Exchange Server 2007. I came across documentation that Windows 2008 DC should not be introduced into any AD site containing Exchange 2000 servers. Also to introduce Exchange Server 2007 server into the AD, you need at least one Windows 2003 DC. So i understand that this will not be a straightforward migration. Has anybody come across or worked on such a migration ? What would be the best way to approach this project ? Thanks in advance, Goldy

Hello Goldy, Take a look here.... Exchange Server and Windows Server 2008 Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 and all previous versions of Microsoft Exchange are not for use with Windows Server 2008 directory servers. The following restrictions apply with respect to Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3: Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 can exist in an Active Directory forest that contains Windows Server 2008 directory servers, but Windows Server 2008 directory servers should not be installed in Active Directory Sites that contain Exchange 2000 Server. If Windows Server 2008 directory servers must be deployed Active Directory Sites that contain Exchange 2000 Server you must first hard-code directory service access (DSAccess) on the Exchange 2000 Server servers in the site to point to directory servers running Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server. If you dont have any other choice, like introduce Windows 2003 SP1 DC into environment, then you can install Windows 2008 DC into Windows 2000 AD & Exchange 2000 environment but you need to point your Exchange 2000 server manually to use Windows 2000/2003 DC/GC with Directory Access Tab on Server property before you start your migration process and installation of Windows 2008 in your AD site. Here is a checklist for Exchange 2007 deployement. Planning Checklist Here are some of the references for your Exchange 2007 + Windows 2008 implementation How to Install Exchange 2007 SP1 Prerequisites on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Installing Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 Exchange Server and Windows Server 2008, Part II
