Vista x64: Performing a repair install from DVD caused irreversible user profile changes
I installed a set of Atari games that unbeknownst to me had a Windows Starforce driver as a requirement, I refused the installation of the driver yet somehow this legal virus was installed / sneaked in around the installer. I didn't know this until last night when my computer rebooted after receiving an update and as a result of the Starforce driver it became unbootable. Since Vista x64 requires signed drivers and this Starforce driver wasn't Windows Vista reported it as corrupt during the boot process. Following the advice of both Windows Vista's error message and some documentation online I went through the repair procedure from the Vista DVD. I checked the log when the procedure completed and it stated that a corrupt driver was found and a system restore was performed.Once the computer booted into Vista I could hear my hard drives working very hard and the system was very sluggish. I started to test out some of my applicaions and noticed that almost every application I had installed beforehand is now completely broken. I could fix those issues by reinstalling my software but it gets more sever from there. My user profile is severly damaged in ways I can't fully explain but I will go on to describe. The folder for my account C:\Users\Lane has duplicate folders when viewed from within applications but not from within Explorer. My applications all now recognize a folder inside of C:\Windows as the default profile folder (Hello Windows 9x). The buttons that link to my profile folders (i.e. Documents, Pictures, Music, etc... ) on the start menu do not work at all. Right clicking on them brings up a folder cannot be found properties box with all options greyed out. All Direct X games I tried will load fine but will not recognize input from my mouse. The antivirus (Symantec 10) was disabled along with every other startup item I had. There are more but I don't want to go on with all the details. What I want to know is if there is any recommended way to recover from the Windows recovery system? I am making a backup now with the intent to reinstall but with this disaster fresh in my mind I am considering just going back to XP.I think something has happened outside of the Starforce infection to Vista because of the recovery process. It seems that Vista knows my profile still exists in the User folder but thanks to the repair it has lost the abililty to link applications to it.My computers specifications if it helps.Intel Q6600, Asus Formula IIThermalTake 700wattnVidia 8800gtxWindows Vista x64 Ultimate SP1Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this? or better yet have a solution that could help me fix this without a full system restore?
