Vista Sysprep issues and Automated machine naming.
I am having issues withSysprep for Vista seems to have a bug, details are in the quote below that comes from the website below (near the bottom of the page) In the above sysprepdomain.xml file you had to enter a Computer Name. I suggested you use an asterisk instead of an actual computer name. In past versions of sysprep, if you left the computer name out of the sysprep configuration file, the install would stop and prompt you for a name. This is typically the way multiple Windows computers were/are setup because each Windows computer needs a unique name. In Windows Vista, there is a bug. If you leave out the computer name, sysprep will generate a random computer name and not stop to prompt you for one. Not only does it not prompt you, but when you try to login to a domain after the PC finishes setup, it will generate an error message. "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed". So far there is no fix for this, however; if you use an asterisk ( * ) for the computer name, it still generates a random name, but there is no error message about the trust relationship. Once the the install finishes, you can simply login to the PC with a user account that has rights to change the computer name (Domain Admins or Account Operators) and rename the computer to its proper name. Not ideal, but until Microsoft fixes this, it is probably the simplest way to address the problem. http://www.svrops.com/svrops/articles/sysprepvista.htm This means that its no use adding the machine to the domain as part of Sysprep because my corporate naming convention has not been added to the machine ? I have seen a couple of responses in the MSDN forums to the same problem that suggest removing ComputerName from the XML file altogether but having tried this I just get an error and Vista goes into a look and will not complete the setup ( Also Vista is a complete pain as Sysprep will only run on a machine 4 times before giving a error this means that after 4 image update the images are useless and have to be started again. I have not looked too hard but there seems to be no fix for this ?

You can try MySysprep 2 at http://www.tsaysoft.com/mysysprep2. You can use SMBIOS info to compose a computer name, for example, <ComputerName>%AssetTag%</ComputerName> or let users input, for example, <ComputerName>%Please input a computer name%</ComputerName>.
