Visio 2013 Templates are not shown after unattened installation

Problem Description:

We install Visio 2013 (both Std and Pro) using a msp file (created with OCT) via Electronic Software Distribution (not SCCM, but simmilar). The problem is, once the software is installed and visio is opened, the default templates are not shown at the New Documents page (All the shapes and stencils are installed, so this is not the problem) There are only two entries (Basic Flowchart and Blank page). When the installation is performed manually by an administrative user (executing setup.exe and following the wizard), the default templates ARE shown at the New Documents page.

What we did so far:

We checked our MSP File. The settings in there are correct so far. Configuration is set to install all features of the package.

We installed the software without a logged on user and when a user is logged on. In both cases, templates are not shown.

We also created an App-V package for the whole Office 2013 suite. Same result as before, no templates are shown

We checked, if UE-V might plays in here. But on a machine with UE-V disabled, also the result is the same as before.

We did also quite intense research to find out if there might is some kind of RegKey where those information is stored to.

Any help to get this problem solved is appreciated.

Hi Markus,

Based on your description, you installed Visio 2013 by using msp file via Electronic Software Distribution, and your Visio didnt install correctly. But if you installed Visio 2013 manually, it installed correctly.

You said >> we installed the software without a logged on user and when a user is logged on<< Did you mean you run as an administrator to install Visio 2013 by Electronic Software Distribution?

Then I tested your issue in my own environment, I found if I disable Allow Office to connect to the Internet option, I can only open Visio with Basic Flowchart and Blank page Featured, but also contain all Categories templates. Did you also contain Categories templates in your Visio? If yes, please check if you set the option to disable office to connect to the Internet.

At last I suggest you can change a tool to install Visio 2013 and check if it works for you.

Hope its helpful.

Hello George,

Yes, we use a msp File to configure the Visio installations. And the installation is so far successful, Beside the issue with the not shown additional templates. i have all the shapes and stencils installed. It's just the templates that are missing. Based on your finding with the "Allow Office to connect to the Internet" option, i think this might could be the issue. I can imaging that office tries to establish a online connection to Office Online and loads additional templates from there. And when this is not possible (or disabled) those templates are not shown. Makes sense somehow. Definitely a point to go after, because the customer has a secured Intranet with no connection to the internet at all.

I also created an App-V package for Visio using the Office 2013 ODT and there i had the same issue, no additional templates are shown.

Regarding your question with the deployment tool: Our client is using a software management solutions which has a background service running. Once there is the task to install software, the installation will be executed by this service, no matter if a user is logged on or not. As long as you have software that follows MS design guides, this is not a problem at all. You only run into trouble if a developer does not respect the MS rules.
