Visio 2013 - "Invalid Data. Your Data File is empty." when Importing SQL data into organization chart.

Hi Guys,

When trying to import data from SQL database using Org Chart import wizard it always says:

"Invalid Data. Your Data File is empty."

This error can be easily reproduce by going:

- Visio 2013

- Org Chart Tab

-Import

- Choosing : Information that is already stored in a file or database

- ODBC compliant data source

- Choose an ODBC connection to SQL databse or create one

- point to a table

- Click next

- "Invalid Data. Your Data File is empty."

Does not matter how you authenticate it always gives that message.

I tried on different tables/database/servers. Always the same error.

This is so disappointing because Visio 2010 had a similar error. In Visio 2010 It worked the  first time but when trying to refresh the data it used to truncate the ODBC name to just the first two characters then complain that the ODBC does not exist.

Any ideas out there? how can we report this to microsoft?

I appreciate any help!!!!

I always test first by attempting to do a connect with MS Access to verify the setup and the returned data.

Identical problem here.  Same SQL view or SQL table.  Works the first time in Visio 2010, not during a refresh (truncates the database name)  "Invalid Data. Your Data File is empty" on Visio 2013 (32-bit and 64-bit versions).  You can use the Link Data to Shapes to create and connect to the same source!!!!

I have tried 32/64 bit, different versions of the SQL native client, SQL 2008 R2 and SQL 2012....they all the same results as described above.  Don't you think they would have fixed these problems in the new release of Visio?

Thanks!

I'm getting a similar response when using the database wizard to connect to a SQL database. TO see if this is a related error I ran a trace on the procedure Kattanc outlined above, and found the same error occurring in the trace:

VISIO           14fc-2794 ENTER SQLSetStmtAttrW
  SQLHSTMT            0x000000028E9F2150
  SQLINTEGER               10014 <SQL_ATTR_METADATA_ID>
  SQLPOINTER          2165658496 <unknown>
  SQLINTEGER                   2

VISIO           14fc-2794 EXIT  SQLSetStmtAttrW  with return code -1 (SQL_ERROR)
  SQLHSTMT            0x000000028E9F2150
  SQLINTEGER               10014 <SQL_ATTR_METADATA_ID>
  SQLPOINTER          2165658496 <unknown>
  SQLINTEGER                   2

DIAG [S1009] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Invalid argument value (0)

Followed, when I select a table, by:

VISIO           14fc-2794 ENTER SQLFetch
  HSTMT               0x000000028E989D70

VISIO           14fc-2794 EXIT  SQLFetch  with return code 100 (SQL_NO_DATA_FOUND)
  HSTMT               0x000000028E989D70

Dear Office Support person, Is there an update on this issue? We are planning to have a visio based solution for our Org Charts.
