Viewing jpeg/jpg in outlook and owa

Hi - We are running exchange 2013 sp1 and have the following problem.

When sending an mms/message from our phones where we have a jpg image attached exchange or outlook removes the image

both in outlook and in owa. The really weird thing is if you press the forward mail button in owa then the image shows up as an attachment and you can open it - This is only a problem when sending from phones. Images send from mail clients works just fine.

Please advice

Regards,

Mads

Hi,

I would like to collect the following information for troubleshooting.

  • Does this issue occur on all users?
  • If we use another phone, does this issue occur?
  • If we use other attachment like doc file, does outlook and owa have the same issue?
  • In Outlook, if we press forward mail button, will the image show up as an attachment?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Lynn-Li,

Thank you for your reply.

1. The issue occurs for all users

2. I have tried several different phones

3. I have tried to attach a video file from an iphone it works in outlook and owa

4. If i press the forward mail button in outlook it does not show the image, but it does in owa.

Thanks for your help and time.

Hi,

On outlook side, please check the following setting:

Click the File tab, select Options, and then click Trust Center. In the Microsoft Outlook Trust Center section, click the Trust Center Settings button, and then uncheck the option Don't download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items.

On Exchange side, please check are there any transport rules or filters blocking the jpg/jpeg image.

Hi,

Tried to uncheck the option in outlook but no difference

No transport rule or filter is blocking jpg/jpeg in exchange

Tried to forward the mms in outlook not displaying the image to an external mail account. On the external account i can view the image just fine?

Best Regards.

Hi Mads,

By saying "an mms/message from our phones" do you mean ActiveSync or something else.

Hi Mads,

Just out of curiosity, how is the MMS flowing into the Exchange Infra. (Brief arch overview if you could)

Are you using some 3rd party application which talks to the mobile operator collects the MMS, converts it to email and then emails it to the actual recipients.

Hi Satyajit,

Im not sure how the mobile operator handles the mms but there is no 3rd party software involved. The mms is received directly on the exchange box for processing.

Hi Mads,

This would mean that the email is not properly formatted for exchange to handle it correctly.

Check with the mobile operator if they are sending the emails in standard html.
