Using windows server backup 2008 for Exchange 2010. Event cannot be found.
I'm tinkering with using Windows server backup on Exchange 2010 to perform VSS backups on my exchange 2010 platform. Doing so manually seems to be successful and even when scheduling they seem to be happening as hoped. The confusing part is that I'm accustomed to reviewing event logs for this success, and am seeing the expected event entries. However the description listed in all the ESE events is similare to the following: The description for Event ID 224 from source ESE cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. I have tried running "As Administrator" and even in the Hyper-V servers console, but all return the same results. All the other Exchange event's seem to be fine, and fully detailed, just these relating to backups. Is this an indication I need a reinstall of Exchange to fix the corrupt ESEutil.exe? Thanks!

Have the exchange server applied service pack 1? Please confirm that the following registry entries are pointed to ese.dll · HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Application\ESE\CategoryMessageFile · HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Application\ESE\EventMessageFile If the entries are pointed to eseutil.exe, please perform a simple test, change entries back to ese.dll, and then run eseutil without attaching any files in a command window, see if the value switches back to eseutil.exe again James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. James Thank you! I noticed that the registry entries were pointing to eseutil.exe in both cases, but had assumed it was something new to Exchange 2010. After resetting to ese.dll I was able to see the ESE source events as expected! I'm not sure I follow the running of eseutil with out attaching a file process, but I ran eseutil with out any switches and received the expected resutls, and the registry settings seem to have been retained. Additionally, I installed Exchange using SP1 so I know it's up to date, so the only think left is what caused this as I really have done nothing to change a base installation. In any event I'm fixed so Thank you again!

I have the same issue and when I change the registry entrys from eseutil.exe to ese.dll and then run eseutil it changes the registry entry so it points back to eseutil.exe. Does this mean I need to reapply SP1? ThanksThanks, Jason
