Using Symbolic Links to store Mailbox Databases on other drives
We were planning on a running our Exchange in a DAG and I was thinking it might be a good idea to point all the mailbox databases to the C drive, because every server has a C. I was planning on using symbolic links to redirect the mailbox databases to other drives on the system. Will there be any kind of performance hit for doing this? Is there any problem with configuring our servers this way? Thank you!

If you have a SAN, you can create mount points. If you're talking about network drives, that's probably not supported. However, I think you're overthinking this. It shouldn't be hard to ensure that all servers in the DAG have the same drive letters for the databases and logs.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

It would be local storage. Thanks!

I don't recommend doing this. After trying this, we had issues getting backups to work that were specifically because of symbolic links.

I've not heard of any reason not to use mount points, but I can't think of any reason you should need to do it anymore with Exchange.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
