Users in Distribution list get blank emails
Hello, We have an Exchange 2003 server in our organization. Has anybody come across a particular issue where you have a distribution list for all employees and out of the blue certain users in the distribution list receive blank bodys? We've tried deleting the distribution list and recreating and the problem still persists, any help will be gladly appreciated. Luis

Hi, We have exact same issue with Exchange 2010. Random recipients in Outlook distribution List that are outside of exchange organization receive blank emails. That usually happens when sales person sends email via bcc. Some recipients from those distro lists also complain about corrupted attachments. ANy clues???? Thanks

What’s the message format of the problematic message? Is there any size difference between the fine message and problematic message? Does the issue only happen to single DL (Distribution List)? Can you reproduce the issue with a new DL? Does the message body still empty when view it from OWA? Does the issue happen permanently to those recipients who received the blank messages? Do you see any pattern for the recipients who received the blank messages? What’s the message format when the sender of DL composed the messages? Please try to send the test mail with other message formats, and monitor the result. The content conversion may cause the issue Resources: The body of an e-mail message may appear to be blank when you open the message in Outlook 2003James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

I have the same exact problem....I have two third party apps that use our exchange server as the SMTP server to send email to our internal users via distribution lists. Both apps send out one email at a time and all the users get the email but some can't open it and get an error..others are just fine for the same email. I thought it to be AV but I removed the email scanning portion of my AV software and still had the same problem. I also removed the AV from a client machine completely and still no success. I've even changed the SMTP server address so the app sends the email through our spam filter first to verify the email is actually all there and I still get users getting blank emails. I have now added my home email address to the DL to see if I get any blanks at home. Something is happening on the exchange server when the message comes in and is then delivered to the DL. I do not have this problem with the apps sent directly to users email accounts. We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 SP2 Outlook 2003 and 2007 clients Windows XP and Windows 7 workstations. OWA shows the exact same thing as Outlook.

Any solutions for this? Don't think it is av as it occurs in OWA as well. Seems to have started once we have more 2007 Outlook clients.

Hi, I have been experiencing this issue alot lately and all I did to fix it (for one user so far) was to delete the clients Outlook profile and recreate it. The user can now see all the e-mails from out allusers@ distribution list (he had about 5 he could not see). Hope that helps. James

Just as when dealing with network problems, where the 1st thing to do is replace the cables, when dealing with Outlook the 1st thing to try is to use a new profile. :-) --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Rich, I created a new profile for an effected user in a VM setup. If I open the email that was sent to the DL on the new VM, and new Outlook Profile the email still appears blank. I don't see how creating the new profile fixes the issue, as it is sporatic. I receive the email as blank only once in a long while. In addition, on this particular user who received the email as blank, if you view the source code of the body it is completely blank. Where as on a user who did receive the email in its entirety the full source code is present. We have turned off scanning of sent email on the users who are sending out the DL. If the sender of the DL forwards the DL'd email to an effected user it will appear correctly in the forwarded email. Suggestion appreciated.

Since you're the 3rd person (besides myself) I see in this thread it's hard to say whether you have the same problem. You may have the same symptom, but that doesn't mean the problem is the same. >I don't see how creating the new profile fixes the issue, as it is sporatic. I receive the email as blank only once in a long while. Then you don't even have the same symptom! >In addition, on this particular user who received the email as blank, if you view the source code of the body it is completely blank. Where as on a user who did receive the email in its entirety the full source code is present. What were you using to view the "source code"? And what e-mail client are you using to read the e-mail? Is the person that receives the "blank" e-mail using an e-mail client that's configured to read mail only in 'plain text' format? Are there multiple MIME body parts in the message? If so, is one of the in plain-text? Does that body part have any content? If not, then perhaps the only thing the client is paying attention to is the MIME prefix, which may be empty. >We have turned off scanning of sent email on the users who are sending out the DL. > >If the sender of the DL forwards the DL'd email to an effected user it will appear correctly in the forwarded email. What happens if the sender Bcc's the person that occasionally gets the empty message body? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
