Use DAG to migrate databases from one server to another?
Good afternoon, We just got a second "primary" exchange 2010 server which will be sharing the database load with our current primary server. I want to move two of the four databases to this new server, and DAG all four databases. Would there be any benefit to migrating the databases from server1 to server2 before creating the DAG, or would creating the DAG and then making two of the four databases "active" on the second server and configuring the second server to be higher in priority for those two databases essentially be the same thing? I would answer this question for myself but our 2010 exchange test environment is in the process of being moved and isn't available for me to do this testing at this time. Thanks in advance for your help.

I see no point in doing anything else given what you have said. If you are going to add both servers to the same DAG, then both servers will have a copy of the database, so you you would end up doing what you want to do either way. Once the DAG is setup, wait for it to seed, then swap the active database around. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Thanks Simon. I figured this would be the best way to go about it, but I wanted to swing it by the experts before going ahead. One thought - if you get a chance to read this...if I want to dissolve the DAG down the road, can I specify which server becomes the sole owner/host of the previously DAG'd database, or will it default to going back to "server1" if the DAG is dissolved? Thanks again!

You can't do anything with a DAG while there is replication taking place. Therefore you have to remove the replicated database before the DAG can be removed. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.
