Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory with Exchange Server 2003 Version 6.55 (Build 7638.2) SP2
I have been reading many blogs discussing this scenario. According to the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix this configuration is doable. However, they do not state what configurations are supported. Just that it is supported and I have been reading many conflicting forums on the issue. I would like some clarification before moving forward. Our current AD environment is Windows Server 2003 Native. We have 3 DC and all are global catalog servers. We are installing 3 new Windows Server 2008 R2 servers to replace the 2003 Servers and would like to raise the functional level to windows server 2008 R2 Functional Level and then retire the old 2003 servers. We do plan on updating Exchange Server to 2010 later this year. My question is this: Is this doable? If not, what recommendations or course of actions should we take?

Yes you can do it. And you install exchange 2010. Introducing 2008 Domain controller it's not going to cause any issue to your exchange server. Even when you raise the level it's not going to cause any issue. The only thing is after raising the functional level to 2008, after that you won't be able to introduce any DC which is not windows server 2008. Post, if you have any question. Hi Gulab, Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it would be an issue as it is shown on the compatibility matrix. Just double checking before I get past the point of no return. Another Question, we are running MS CRM 4.0 with the outlook plugin. Should I be worried about that or will it be fine as well with the AD 2008 R2 Upgrade? Cheers, Rodney

Hi Rodney, I don't think so you should be worried about it. It shouldn't cause any issues to the CRM plugin's. If you want to make sure than i would suggest open up a thread with CRM team and i am sure they will give you exact answer of this question. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/categories/ Cheers,Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com
