Upgrade advise exchange 2003 to 2010
Hi Guys heres my situation I have been given the task to install a new exchange 2010 server to replace the old 2003 one. This is within a small one domain infrastructure I have researched into this quite a bit and just wanted to clarify. Can i install the 2010 server even though i have the server 2003 running ( this will be done during down time). Will this cause any problems as i was under the impression i would have to run the /prepareschema /preparelegacyexchangepermissions and the /preparead command before 2010 could be implemented. As you may have gathered i am fairly new to exchange. Thanks In advance Russ

you can run exchange setup while you have exchange 2003. i hope you understand that in place upgrade is not supported you have to introduce 2010 in a new box in existing exchnage 2003 organization. here are detailed steps http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638130.aspx Dhruv

Hi Dhruvaraj Thanks For the reply. I do understand this and have built a separate server 2008r2 VM for my exchange 2010. I want to know do i have to run the schema commands for AD /prepareschema /preparelegacyexchangepermissions and the /preparead if i already have a exchange 2003 server running. The artical you posted dosnt mention this. Many thanks Russ

Agree with Gulab. Here is an article that will step you through the process and also give you verification steps along the way: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspxTim Harrington | MVP: Exchange | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010, MCITP: Server 2008, MCTS: OCS Blog http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com | Twitter @twharrington

I would recommend walking through each step using the 2010 Deployment Assistant: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exdeploy2010/default.aspx#Index
