Update rollup 5 problem
Hello I'm having problems trying to install Exchange 2007 Update Rollup 5. I tried two ways for this: Windows Update and standalone installer. Both produce same results: - update starts, services are stopped and disabled - looks like it's copying files since the progress bar slowly goes to 100% - installation stops at 100%, looks like it's waiting for something, nothing else happens (been waiting all night), I can just kill the setup I've found a log file C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ServiceControl.log that says: [10:46:42] * ServiceControl.ps1: 2007-10-31 10:46:42[10:46:42] Performing service control with options: BeforePatch[10:46:42] Setting ApplicationBase to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin[10:46:42] Setting AssemblyName to Microsoft.Exchange.PowerShell.Configuration, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35[10:46:42] Setting CustomPSSnapInType to Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.SetupPSSnapIn[10:46:42] Setting PowerShellVersion to 1.0[10:46:42] Setting Description to Setup Tasks for the Exchange Server (v685)[10:46:42] Setting ModuleName to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin\Microsoft.Exchange.PowerShell.configuration.dll[10:46:42] Setting Version to 8.0.0.0[10:46:42] Setting Vendor to Microsoft[10:47:59] Saving service and registry data[10:47:59] Saving service state to 'C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.INT\LOCALS~1\Temp\StoppedServices.xml'...[10:48:00] Saving services registry data[10:48:00] Adding to installed roles list: AdminTools[10:48:00] Adding to installed roles list: ClientAccess[10:48:00] Adding to installed roles list: Bridgehead[10:48:00] Adding to installed roles list: Mailbox ...Stopping/Disabling/ignoring services...[10:48:20] Script completed succesfully. There are some previous entries from Rollup 3 and 4 which say "BeforePatch" and "AfterPatch". This time there is no "AfterPatch" and issuing "ServiceControl.ps1 AfterPatch" fromExchange shelldoes not work either (it worked with rollup 4). Update Rollup 5 appears in Add/Remove programs, but the patch is not working - most Exchange services do not start at all! When I try to remove it same thing happens - it's uninstalling and once the bar reaches 100% it sits there forever waiting. Please if you have any suggestions, I'd be grateful. The system is Win 2003 x64 Enterprise, and Exchange 2007 x64Enterprise, all services on one server (~200 mailboxes).

Hello, I'm having the same problem - the only workaround I found is uninstalling rollup 5. but now on my mailbox-serverI have to start manually the service "Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service" after every reboot. when I am doing a reboot I have event ID 7024 "the microsoft exchange information store service terminated with service-specific error 0 (0x0)" the system is Win 2003 x64 Enterprise, and Exchange 2007 x64Enterprise, 2 Servers -1 Mailbox-Server, all other Roles on the second Server (~300 Mailboxes with 5 DB's) any ideas?

I have the same issue. The install is not halted however. It is pre-compiling the newassemblies. Because they are signed with a"Authenticode signature" setup wants to verify publisher information at clr.microsoft.com:80. It sents a SYN packet, with a TTL of 121, which will timeout when a server does not have internetaccess. For every assembly that is pre-compiled by the setup program a new SYN packet will be send. When the installation is complete, every time the services start "Publisher Verification" will be done. When the server does not have internet access the start of the services will time out. You can workarround this by doing any of the following: 1: allow internet access 2: set a proxy server using the proxycfg.exe cmd. (ex: proxycfg.exe -p "proxy.fqdn.com:8080" "<local>;*.internaldomain.com". You don't even have to allow access. The proxy will deny access, hence eliminating the TTL on the SYN packet to timeout. 3: uninstall rollup 5 and install rollup 4. 4. Set the startup timeout of services to a higher value following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922918 5: Install hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942027/and exclude the assemblies from verification following article: http://blogs.msdn.com/shawnfa/archive/2007/05/07/bypassing-the-authenticode-signature-check-on-startup.aspx Cheers, Mark

I will try that on friday in a test environment. The Exchange server indeed does not have direct Internet access. I left it running all night long and nothing new happened. I had the same issue with rollup 4 but it works ok even without having finished completely. I noticed that Exchange in companion with IIS ASP.Net worker processesare takingALL the availableRAM and ALL the swap space, all the time. There were alreadysituationswhere Exchange was refusing incoming connections on port 25with "452 4.3.1 Insufficient system resources".

today i have tried the<configuration> <runtime> <generatePublisherEvidence enabled="false" /> </runtime></configuration> etries in the .exe.config files and it worked on the virtual test environement (no direct internet access). and indeed my production servers also have no direct internet access. fore some exchange services there where no .exe.config files and i had to create them. now everything is working with rollup 5 in the ( virtual) test environement. i will let you know when i have tried on the production machines (next maintenance window).hi all again, just patched all my exchange servers with rollup 5 and everything is workong fine (i used proxycfg.exe -u to allow internet access)thanks to allgreetings oliver

That Exchange takes all available RAM is normal. It will cache as much as possible in memory. When you experience ""452 4.3.1 Insufficient system resources" you need to take a look at your backpressure settings. In RTM the Version Buckets counters are set to low. You can safely double them. In fact, In SP1 they are doubled. Cheer, Mark
