Unstable Lync-search in Outlook contacts

Hi!

We are having trouble getting all relevant hits when searching for Outlook-contacts from Lync 2013. A search for 'Lars' in Lync will give me only 1 hit, but i outlook it will give me 6 hits on different persons.

I have done a lot of testing, and it turns out that the problem does not exist with Lync version 15.0.4481.1004 and older Lync-versions, but it is a problem with all newer versions than this. It stops working when I install version 15.0.4505.1510 (KB2817465) from July 2013.

We are using Exchange 2010 SP3 and EWS is working well.

Can anyone please help me sort this out? What changes with version 15.0.4505.1510 that makes the Outlook-contact-search from Lync stop in our environment?

Hi,

I haven't found anything stating the change of search behavior about KB2817465 yet.

Would you please provide more details about this symptom? Such as the snapshots of the search results it gave before(6) and after(1) the update, this will help me understand the steps you performed better. You can share it to our email address below to protect your private information:

Hi,

I have discovered a couple of new things in regard to the subject:

Lync and Outlook give different results when you search for a contact, and this seems to be by design. Lync will not be able to search for a name after a space in the firstname or lastname-properties on a contact, whereas Outlook will. E.g. A search for 'John' in Lync will not give you a hit on a contact that is stored with firstname ='Albert John', whereas Outlook will give you a hit on this. Lync will not search for any middle-names either

Allthough this does explain a lot of the problems I have seen, I still have some contacts that is impossible to search from Lync. It looks like a workaround is to move them from the contacts-store in Outlook to a pst-file, and then move them back again. I don't know why this helps. Mayby there is a problem with the search-indexer in Exchange. I will look into this.

Regards

Magne
