Uninstalling Exchange 2000 didn't go smoothly, any consequence?
I'm at the last step to decommission Exchange 2000 in a SBS2000 server. However, it asks for a CD Rom of SBS2000. I couldn't find it (maybe someone had thrown it by error!) In MSDN website, SBS2000 isn't available. All I could find is a CDRom of Exchange 2000 *Enterprise *. So I tried it. At the end of the uninstall, there's a dialog telling me that it can't validate the order of uninstall or something like that (I didn't copy the exact message) My question is: * What does uninstallation of Exchange 2000 do exactly? * In the Exchange organization (right now, there's only an Exchange 2007), how can I know if the old Exchange 2000 has disappeared? * Actually, this SBS2000 is supposed to disappear, does it matter? TIA

hi,uninstallation of exchange server 2000 clears its information from the exchange organization. before uninstalling exchange server you must move all the mailboxes, databases and public folders to your new exchange server.and uninstallation of exchange 2000 removes that unsupported features from organization such as NNTP, IM etc...you must also wait for the public folder replication occuring. if you remove exchange without replicating them maybe you can lost public folder data.you can check exchange system manger to verify uninstallation of exchange server 2000 and with ADSIEdit you can clear your configuration for exchange server 2000.did you check your new exchange server 2007? is it working as you want and everything is right?so if it is working I think it will not be a problem. but you can clean everything that belong to exchange server 2000 configuration... (by ADSIEdit)and for uninstalling exchange server 2000 from your organization ;http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905.aspxregards,Mumin CICEK | Exchange - MVP | www.cozumpark.com | www.mumincicek.com

Q: What does uninstallation of Exchange 2000 do exactly? Please refer to Step 4: Remove Exchange 2000 from the domain in this document, which gives the exact steps Q: In the Exchange organization (right now, there's only an Exchange 2007), how can I know if the old Exchange 2000 has disappeared? We can use ADSI Editor to verify if the exchange 2000 has been remove from AD a. Launch ADSI Editor (Start->Run->ADSIEditor.msc) b. Expand CN=Configuration, DC= Domain_Name ,DC=com->CN=Services ->CN=Microsoft Exchange->CN= Your_Organization_Name->CN=Administrative Groups ->CN= Your_Administrative_Group_Name->CN=Servers c. Under CN=Servers node, please see if theres the name of exchange 2000 server. it shall be like CN=ServerName Q: Actually, this SBS2000 is supposed to disappear, does it matter? After the migration, you can either remove Exchange 2000 from SBS or let it co-exist with exchange 2007. If you want them to co-exist, some pointers need to be considered. Please refer to the links in the bottom of this article Notes: Since it asked for SBS 2000 CD, please contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for knowing how to obtain the SBS 2000 installation CD. You can get the phone number from here. Thanks!

OK, I'm able to find a backup copy of those CD I made years ago. This time I'm using this CD (because I'm actually doing migration simulation using virtualized environment before doing it in production) but I still get the message: ------- Setup is unable to determine a valid ordering for the installation. See the error log for further details. ------- No idea which error log it's talking about. Since I don't want any co-existence of Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2007 but only pure Exchange 2007 , so I suppose I need to do some clean-up manually.

I've just done the migration in production environment and this time it's worse! The "Exchange system attendant" service can't be stopped. Actually, it's status is showing "starting" instead of stopping !?? I think the process is called MAD.exe.... well, it's really mad... And it's not possible to stop the uninstallation process, and after waiting for an hour without any result, I force a server reboot and tried to uninstall again. The second time it was able to uninstall, but I'm afraid some informations got left in the AD/registry/I-don't-know-where. I've done what's suggested by James and found that the server (name) isn't inside ADSI. Is it sufficient to say that the uninstallation was clean?

Partially yes, since we can confirm that old exchange has been removed via ADSI Editor, which means that old exchange configuration has been cleaned up from AD. But in order to remove the rest of exchange from Registry and other places on the SBS server, please follow the steps in the KB 260378

Since my old Exchange 2000 server machine has disappeared (decommissioned, kicked out of the domain and shutdown completely), I'm sure if I still find its name or its IP address in the AD or Exchange Organization, I know how to delete it. However, I can't see how to do a find within ADSI Edit. I also had tried to do an export with ADSI Edit, but the text file that I got only contains data at one level. I was actually expecting a complete export like the one we get with regedit.
