Unexpected error when merging mailbox from a Recovery Storage Group
When I try to merge a mailbox from a recovery storage group to a target mailbox, I keep getting the following error: Error merging mailbox (/O=ExOrg/OU=RE/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=B1C0111A) into user (shawntest). Error message is: Unexpected error [0x2AFCF79] while executing command 'restore-mailbox -Identity shawntest -rsgdatabase "EX-CMS01\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Database" -rsgmailbox "/O=ExOrg/OU=RE/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=B1C0111A" -TargetFolder -BadItemLimit 0'.. Any ideas?

Is there anything in the Event Log (Application or System) that might indicate some additional information on this error? Is the RSG database mounted?

No errors in the event log. The RSG is mounted and I have tried a dismount/remount. Oddly enough, if I go back and try again with different options, for example, merging back into the matched mailbox instead of an alternate mailbox, I get a permission related error, something along the lines of "No suitable domain controller was found in domain..." I have Exchange Org. admin permissions and have administrator permissions to AD. I'm thinking the issue is related to permissions but I'm stumped as to what permission I would need that I don't already have.

Hi, What's the Exchange Server version, Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007 Before Exchange 2003 SP1, We use the Exmerge tool to recover mailbox data. To use the Exmerge tool, the account running the exmerge need have the send as and recevie as permission of the mailbox. For more informaiton, please check below article: Http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273642 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292509 After Exchange 2003 SP1, Recovery Storage Group has the feature of merge and copy mailbox data to the matched mailbox, for detailed steps, please refer to the below articles: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996155(EXCHG.65).aspx http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/ExMerge-Recover-Mailbox.html http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Mailboxes-Exchange2003-SP1.html In Exchange 2007, we use command line Restore-Mailboxin ESH or Exchange toolboxto perform the Job as well. To run the Restore-Mailbox cmdlet, the account you use must be delegated the Exchange Server Administrator role and local Administrators group for both the source and target servers. -Jason

The mailbox server is a CCR cluster running Exchange 2007 SP1 with Update Rollup 3. I'm using the the Troubleshooting Assistant wizard to try and run the merge. From what I can tell, it almost looks like an AD permission error. The error I get from the ExTRA is: Error merging mailbox into user (shawntest) Error merging mailbox (/O=ExOrg/OU=RE/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=B1C0111A) into user (shawntest). Error message is: Unable to find 'ROOTDC1' computer information in domain controller 'ROOTDC1.domain.com' to perform the suitability check. Verify the fully qualified domain name.. The DC, ROOTDC1, is fully operational, in the same AD site, pingable, etc, etc. Any other ideas?

Ok, I was able to resolve the issue with help from PSS. My AD environment has an empty forest root domain, with 2 domain controllers. There is a child domain, that has 4 domain controllers, and Exchange and user accounts reside in the child domain. Since the DCs in the root domain are barely used, the AD topology discovery would always rank the 2 root DCs at the top of the list. So when running a merge of a mailbox from an RSG, one of the root DCs would always be contacted and then the merge wouldn't complete. The solution I had to run the restore-mailbox cmdlet from the shell and use the -globalcatalog switch and specify one of the DCs in the child domain. Once I did that, it worked likea charm. Also, I am going to configure the -StaticConfigurationDomainController -StaticGlobalCatalogs -StaticDomainControllers for my CMS so as to exclude the root DCs. Shawn

Basically, instead of merging a mailbox fromthe Recovery Stroage Group using the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant wizard, you need to run your restore from the Exchange Management Shell. For example: Restore-Mailbox -Identity alternateMailboxAlias -RSGDatabase'CMSName\Recovery Stroage Group\Mailbox Database'-RSGMailboxsourceMailboxAliasInRSG -BadItemLimit100 -GlobalCatlog <FDQN of GC in your child/Exchange domain> -TargetFolder 'Inbox\RestoredMailbox' And if I have messed up the syntax in this example, all you'll have to do is try the restore again from the ExTRA gui, copy out the powershell commands and then run it from the shell yourself but add the -GlobalCatalog switch.

The -globalcatalog switch also helped me! I was experiencing the same error when attempting to use the Export-Mailbox command to delete the content of a mailbox. Once I added the GC switch to my script, I was able to successfully run the script again. Example: Get-Mailbox -id 'user' | Export-Mailbox -globalcatalogserver.fqdn.com -DeleteContent Thanks,

Seems that in a Year Microsoft has not developed their product because we have faced the same problem. It is strange why the ExTRA is following the Exchange. That makes Exchange to look poor. Has anybody got ExTRA to work in multidomain environments where the root domain is like in Shawn's case, empty from the users. -- Petri

All, Sweet fix. The day they stop Google is the day I quit ;-) Any idea how we can select the equivalent -globalcatalog switch from within the ESM Toolbox. Just using the Restore-Mailbox -Identity.... EMS Will give the Tape storage and Restore guys a heart attack Shawn - could you expand on the "Also, I am going to configure the -StaticConfigurationDomainController -StaticGlobalCatalogs -StaticDomainControllers for my CMS so as to exclude the root DCs" comment. Have you done this yet ? Cheers Tim

" Has anybody got ExTRA to work in multidomain environments where the root domain is like in Shawn's case, empty from the users." You can now specify the domain controller after ExTRA starts up...
