Unexpected Error (32809) when running macros after update

I wrote a VBA program on a Win7 machine running Office 2010. This program was then saved to my company's network where it is accessed and used by computers running Win8.1 and Office 2013. As part of the program the 2013 machine is supposed to save a backup copy of the file to a location in a network folder. Opening up a copy on my Win8.1 Office 2013 machines work fine. The problem I'm having is that every time one of these backup copies on my Win7 Office 2010 machine is opened I receive the "Unexpected Error(32809)" message. The original file (the one that is modified by the Win8.1 machine opens fine on the Win7 machine as well. Additionally I can open the backup modified copies on co-workers computers and on the company's terminal server without issue which leads me to believe that this is a Windows update problem. If it helps the error pops and the line of code  highlighted in the VBA editor is a simple workbook_open macro. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi,

According to your description, this issue may be caused by the MS14-082 Microsoft Office Security Updates for December 2014. To workaround the issue, please try the following steps:

Perform a search on your hard disk for files that have the ".exd" file name extension and delete all the .exd files that you find. These extender files will be under the user's profile and may also be in other locations, such as the following:

  • %appdata%\microsoft\forms
  • %temp%\excel8.0
  • %temp%\word8.0
  • %temp%\PPT11.0
  • %temp%\vbe
